THE DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO POINTS

By Al Garcia

Imagine you know the location of two points. For example, the beginning of life and the end of life. Now, imagine a straight line from one to the other. So simple. So clean. So direct and so unwavering.

But life is not a mathematical equation, with vertical and horizontal distances that merge at some time and in some place, as two lines that eventually intersect, without interruption or disruption.

It is not the distance between two points that defines a human life, but all the dots along the way connecting each position, every location and all situations. And it doesn’t matter what order the points are in, because the positives, the negatives, and the highs and the lows, are what makes life worth living, and what makes living worth feeling the ecstasy and the agony of each moment and each day.

Too short sometimes the distance, too long sometimes the struggle, but life, for however long or short the distance – is what we make of it, and not just two points that intersect, nor as simple as a straight line from one to the other.

In life the distance between two points is defined by the quality and intensity of our existence, and not measured by the quantity of our fortune or the opulence of our lives. And it is the zigs and the zags along the way that makes life interesting and memorable.

The distance between two points? Measured one step at a time.
