THE CHILD WITHIN

By Al Garcia

There is a child that lives within each of us.  A child that has eluded the passage of time and of the seasons.  A child that seeks the warmth of affection and the gentleness of a caring touch.

It is the child within that nurtures and enriches our appreciation of all that surrounds us and everyone that embraces us.  It is the child within that brightens our eyes, widens our smile and amplifies our love.

I have seen the withered and decaying lives of those who have closed their hearts and souls to their child within.  Too afraid to feel the joy.  Too hurt to let go the past.  Too wise to accept the simplicity of love or acceptance.  And their eyes betray the sadness of their lives, while their worn and tired faces reveal the displeasure of their acceptance of life without that spark that kept alive their dreams.

It is not age that destroys the child within.  For it is the spark of the child within that ignites and keeps alive the hope and dreams that light the path to our tomorrows.  Only sorrow and self-pity can destroy or purge that wonderous child within.

There is no need to search for the fountain of youth – it has always been within us as the child within – our internal and personal fountain of youth.
