TIME TO TAKE THE BLINDERS OFF

By Al Garcia

For far too long we have lived in a self-absorbed, egotistic and narcissistic world.  A world conceived through the aspirations of good, of hope and of promise.  A world gone awry by the avarice of human desires and passions that extinguished the light of reason and purpose.

When was the last time we walked past a stranger and took the time to see them?  How many times have we ignored a homeless man, sitting alone, tired, hungry and desperate to hear a kind or gentle word?  Why do we avoid looking into the eyes of someone we feel superior to or beneath the dignity of our time or our acknowledgment as an equal or simply as a human being?

We have become accustomed to unknowingly and unconsciously demean and degrade those less fortunate, less prosperous or less blessed than us.  We have ensconced ourselves in self-made ivory towers of preconceived notions and obsolete fantasies of what life is suppose to be.  We have blinded ourselves from the reality that surrounds us, ignoring the cries of poverty and hunger, the screams that sear the human heart of those in wars without a cause, and the wails of grief and sorrow of those who have given up because no one took the time to hear or see their plight of desperation and desolation.

Always too busy making money and building castles in the sand.  Always moving, never stopping to see the changing world before us, or the people walking by.  Always planning to overtake, never seeming to undertake.  Armies marching across boundaries and human barriers, terrorists and fanatics, disciples of mayhem -- bombing and killing -- creating chaos and havoc, and men in three-piece suits or military attire, scheming and plotting to deceive, betray or mislead their nations and the world.  That is the world that has been recreated by man.  A world full of people, blinded by greed, by power and selfishness and self-indulgence.

And now, a time out.  The world has been placed on hold.  Lives have been disrupted, other afflicted, and many destroyed.  A time to think.  A moment to listen and to see.  The world for once, sharing, caring and feeling each other’s pain and each other’s anxiety and fear.  For once, the enemy is something other than ourselves.  And it overwhelms our arrogance and conceit to know that there is something greater than who we thought we were.

It is time to take the blinders off, and begin to see the whole world for what it is.  It is every town, everywhere, whether city, town, parish, village or hamlet.  It is people like you and me, but of different colors, nationalities and religions, speaking different languages, but of the same human race.  And it is hearts and souls and minds that dream and hope alike.

It is time to take the blinders off, and to see the strangers before us and among us.  It is time to reach out and touch someone with our heart, with our understanding and with our compassion.  For the world is made up of people, not strangers or shadows that pass us by and fade into the night.

Blinders off! Time to see the world through eyes and hearts and souls that can feel the passion and the grace of respecting one another, helping one another, and lifting one another up in times like this.
