IN THE BELLY OF THE BEAST

By Al Garcia

I saw the creature that is war, and I saw it devour and consume the innocence that was me.  It was ruthless and pitiless, brutal and unfeeling.  It was the hidden fiend within the hardened heart of the human beast within.

I saw blood flowing from the lifeless forms beneath my feet, and felt and tasted the fear that surged through my veins and through my mind as I waited for the flash of light that would forever shut my eyes, and it never came.

I was within the grasp of the very beast that took my friends and maimed and forever harmed the sons of unsuspecting families.  I touched the face and felt the clutch of death and escaped without a scratch or a graze, other than a heart and soul forever scarred.

And I saw the flag-draped coffins of the slaughtered and the slain as they were loaded into the belly of the flying beast that would return the fallen heroes to homes now left empty, unfilled and devoid of the laughter and the joy that once filled the air and space between the walls that once confined his heart and soul.

I saw the beast that is war, and I cannot forget or forgive the arrogance of man to ignore the trust and innocence of the boys and men they sent into the jaws of the beast without remorse or sorrow.

To be in the belly of the beast, and hear the silence and feel the sorrow of ultimate peace, one cannot attempt to forget or forgive the hidden creature from within the human heart that devoured and consumed the dreams that never came to be.
