CELEBRATING WHO’S AMERICA?

By Al Garcia

The 4th of July used to be a celebration of freedom and democracy.  Today our country’s July 4th celebration takes on a new meaning and new image.  Today the heartbeat of America is fluttering and to trembling.

Today I do not feel as patriotic as I once did.  As a veteran I feel used and abused.  I feel betrayed.

Today I mourn America for having lost its way.  Men, women and children in cages like animals.  Our governmental institutions degraded and downgraded.  Our world stature ridiculed.  Our decency and our morality questioned.  And the worst of all – seeing and hearing our own citizens rallying, shouting and yelling support for even more autocratic, inequitable and even down right unconstitutional behavior and action by our elected officials.

Today I do not feel as patriotic as I once did.  My American flag is not flying as high and as proud as it once was.  It remains in a dark and dusty closet, waiting to be unfurled and displayed again when America once again is the home of the free and the brave.  And when the images of the cages and chains of suppression and repression are removed and erased from our minds and our hearts.  But most of all, I will fly my flag again, when once again, our Congress and our Supreme Court returns to the normalcy envisioned by our Founding Fathers, and which had, for almost 245 years, been the foundation of our democracy.

I want to see my flag fly high and proud again.  I want to feel the spirit and the pride of America again.  I want to celebrate the ideas and ideals given to us by our Founding Fathers again.  I want to stand up as a proud American again.  I want to celebrate the 4th of July again – hopefully soon, as once we did.
