Has it been long enough? Maybe a few minutes more, just to be sure.

Looking out across the breathtaking landscape, I see a view that–until recently–has remained unchanged in my mind over the countless times I’ve gazed upon it. Our house was just over the rise, so I’ve spent most of my life staring at that horizon, but I can’t help but feel the magic has disappeared. Something is off now. It’s like a black-and-white photograph that’s undergone artificial coloring. The effect is almost enough to fool someone into believing that was the original snapshot, but not quite. Scanning the cliffs and the shoreline in the distance, that is how it feels to me now.

I feel the tickle of hair tips on my cheek from a feint breeze, pulling me back to the here and now. I know it’s cold, but I don’t feel it. I could say it’s because I have my mother’s favorite shawl wrapped around my shoulders, the familiar scent almost coaxing a smile out of me, but that’s not why the morning chill doesn’t reach me. I’m already numb and have been for some time.

Until now, whenever I attempted to peer into the future, my mind would shut down beyond this day. Now that it’s here, albeit in a different capacity, I feel disconnected from it.

My mother’s cancer and our battle with it have taken everything. In the end, it even ripped away the will to live. Her suffering finally convincing us to concede to desperate pleas.

The pills would have done their job by now. There is no weeping, my tear ducts having given out with exhaustion long ago.

I surveyed the vista one more time before heading back.

There is still peace here, but the splendor is gone forever.

I enjoyed this. It has similarities to the one I posted. I like that we conceived similar stories but also very different stories
