What should have been a simple camping trip, turned into a night of extreme terror!

I have finally gotten the nerve to write this story down, just for own my sanity. It was about mid fall, back in 1999 and two friends of mine and I went camping in the woods, it wasn't deep woods, just a mile or so off the dirt road. We had planned to stay the weekend, but that was cut short. My two friends Steve and Carl are really into cryptids, they're what I would call 'amateur paranormal investigators'. They have both been into monster books and stuff like that since we were kids.

When this happened, we were 18, and we all had been camping most of our lives. So the three of us went out, we took the normal gear and provisions. we had one big tent and Steve had brought his cooking gear, food, flashlights and even a recorder, one of those machines that you can pick up waves of vibrational energy and spirit voices, just in case there's anything spooky going on. I got a chuckle from all their 'ghost gear' but I was just along for the trip. I didn't mind, but they seemed to be very serious about it all. We finally got to a good spot to set up camp. The forests of Washington state are super gorgeous in the day time but at night, very dark and a bit scary. It was a cloudy night and we never saw the moon. Like I said, we weren't into the dense and thick forest, yet around 6:00 it started to get dark.

We set up the tent, built a fire, ate some food plus drank a little vodka Steve had brought. "just a tiny bottle" he said. I mean, we didn't want to get crazy but we figured we'd celebrate since we just got there. We were sitting around telling monster stories and I was just listening to these two going back and forth and they wanted to get me involved so I said, "yeah, I believe in that stuff, I've just never seen anything." We each had about three or four shots of vodka and feeling no pain, Carl had the great idea of getting up and going out into the forest to 'explore' and of course Steve was really into it. I wasn't into it but I didn't worry too much, because I knew we had huge flashlights, a lot of gear and so I went along. We walked for about 40 minutes when Steve noticed off in the distance, some kind of structure and it wasn't until we got close that we saw it was a huge three-story house, no doubt it was abandoned, actually it looked like it could fall apart at any moment. Steve, walking around back and shouted, "Hey, come check out these huge vines !" They were covering up the entire house plus the roof and we all laughed when I said, "these vines are probably what's keeping this house standing." We all nodded in agreement.

Carl then looked at Steve and said, "you know we have to go inside don't cha?" Steve looked at me then quickly back at Carl and said, "ya man, let's do it!" Then they both looked at me for my answer and it came quite easily, "You two go, check it out, I mean someone has to stand exterior parameter sentry, right?" They both stood there staring at me with their mouths slightly open when Steve said, "Damn dude, you've been watching ghost hunting videos or something??" We all laughed, my friends still couldn't believe those words I strung together so naturally. So I said, "am I wrong?"...they both quickly shook their heads no. With this, we turned around and noticed that the back door was broken in half which made access super easy. Carl joked as he raised his hand to his mouth and spoke as though he was speaking into a walkie talkie, "Team leader to exterior scout, come in please..." then he dropped his hand and we all had another good laugh, and I could tell we were all thinking the same thing, we wish we had walkie talkies. They started walking up to the porch, slightly hesitant and before I knew it, they were both out of sight. Soon I saw the interior of the house light up, it's funny how brave one can feel with a huge flashlight.

Once they were inside, I looked around, to take my baring's and to scan my environment, they say once your brain pictures the way things are now, if something changes, it's easier to notice it, well that's what the ghost hunters say. I just know none of that would stop me from crapping my pants if a Bigfoot or a shape shifter starting walking toward me....hahaha. It was a gorgeous quiet night, crickets were doing their thing which was the predominant audio, (more ghost hunting terms) and I couldn't quite say how much time had passed since those two went in the house, but my darkness searching was shattered when I heard Carl scream like something terrible. It was very loud, even though they were in this big house, as I hesitated, Steve came running to the door and yelled, "Dude, get in here! Carl has fallen through the floor!" and before I knew it, Steve and I were standing over a huge hole in the floor, looking down at Carl who was barely moving. Just when I yelled, "Hey Carl, you ok?" he started to move, then he screamed again, but this time, in pain. Shining our flashlights on Carl, we could see his femur sticking through his leg and he was bleeding really bad. I also noticed that where he was, wasn't really a basement, the floor was made of unleveled dirt and was about 20 feet from where we were.

As we scanned the edges of the hole, we could not see the walls where Carl had fallen. We knew this was a big hole. "Fuck this shit hurts man!!! Ya gotta come get me out!" Carl screamed as he took out some rope to tie a tourniquet around his thigh. "Ya ok, let's look around, there should be a staircase" Steve said as he looked at me, and he seemed pretty shook up. We looked around as I am sure Carl was doing as well. Steve went back to the edge of the hole and said," Carl, we don't see any stairs here, can you see anything down there?" I could see Carl scanning the parameter and said, "No dude, I don't see anything...oh wait!" I said, "what do you see?" Carl started describing the hug pit he was in, about a 25 x 25 foot space, all dirt and nothing else, but then he said there was another hole to the right with a small passage that he could see with his flashlight, it looked like another big 'room' and again all dirt.

Steve and Carl had been best friends since grade school and Steve was in a hurry to get down there and get Carl out. We both knew getting Carl back home in his condition, would not be an easy task. Carl was the biggest and heaviest of us three, maybe that's why the floor fell through, who knows. Steve pulled some rope from his 'survival pack' as he called it and I felt bad for laughing at him earlier. He quickly tied off one end to the lower step railing that went upstairs, came back to the hole, looked at me and slowly lowered himself down to Carl. About half way down, the railing broke and Steve fell about 8 feet twisting his ankle. Watching all this happened, I was thinking, oh great, two injured dumbasses. It was their idea to go camping, to go 'exploring' and to go in this stupid house in the first place! Steve got up, "I'm alright, what happened!?" I told him the railing snapped and I all I heard was him cussing some more. "I am going over to see what's in that other room" Steve told us both, and as he limped over shinning his light, he entered the room, not saying much. From what I could see the passage was about 5 feet around., but that's about all I could see.

Then we heard Steve say, "OH SHIT!" Carl and I looked at each other, then back at the hole where Steve was walking back from and he said, "That room is filled with coffins..." We were like, what? He continued, "there are about 30 coffins in there, all old and wooden, a few leaning against the wall, some stacked up and some laying on the ground." A few seconds of silence passed and then I said, "this house must have belonged to a mortuary or cemetery or something" Carl looked at me nodding his head yes, we looked at Steve and he wasn't so sure but what else could it be? Steve's ankle was still hurting and he said, "We need to lift you outta here Carl", as he tightened his tourniquet. Looking up at me, Steve said, "Dude, I need you to look around up there for a flat piece of wood, for a make shift gurney, also look for some more rope or something we can use its place." Carl chimed in, "ya maybe some curtains, or bed sheets we can tie together..." We both looked at him when he said," I saw it in a movie once." "Anything else?" I asked Steve. He just looked at me and he seemed annoyed that I was still standing there. Taking the hint, I started looking around, it was pitch black in there, except for my flashlight.

I first looked for some rope and then stumbled onto some curtains on the floor, in a pile, I remember chuckling, like how did Carl know? I still needed to find a make shift gurney and soon found myself entering the kitchen and as I did, I saw that the cupboard doors were falling off and over in the corner, was like a pantry or broom closet, with a door perfect for what we needed. It took me some time to get it off the cabinet, yet I actually felt very proud of myself, I found a gurney and curtains within like six minutes of searching. I picked up the door and started walking back to get the curtains, when both Carl and Steve started screaming louder than I have ever heard any one scream...and then Carl stopped screaming all together. I had already dropped everything running back to the hole and then Steve stopped screaming also.

I got to the edge, I shined my light down toward where they were, and Carl was gone, there was only a trail of blood leading to the other room and what ever was hovering over Steve, which seemed to be feeding on his neck, turned around and what I saw I will never, ever forget. As it turned to look at me, I could tell its face and hands were covered in blood, it looked like a hairless werewolf and kinda part vampire. As we locked eyes, I turned and ran out of the house and didn't stop until I was back at the car. Forgetting about our tent and belongings, I sped out of there faster than I had ever driven before. I knew those two were dead, I also knew that many people are going to have many questions, but at that time, all I could think about is my survival and that hairless creature and its red glowing eyes looking at me, as though I was next on the menu. Many years later, I still have nightmares and don't go camping or hiking any more.
