A PRAYER FOR THE INNOCENCE OF YOU

(For the Senseless Young Victims of Shootings)

By Al Garcia

I cried for each of you last night.  My tears reflecting the pain and anguish that such tragedies always leave behind.  I cried for each of you not because of what you did or said, but rather simply because I realized how much your families and friends will miss your smiles, your voices, your hugs.  I cried for you last night, but there were no tears that I could wipe away.  For I have already shed too many tears and felt the hurt, the pain and helplessness of tragedies like this before. Senseless.  Pointless.

You are now the brilliance of a rainbow after a summer’s rain.  You are the twinkle of a star in the vastness of the sky, the peddle of a perfect rose, the beauty of a snowflake.  You are the sun, the air, the wind that blows against my face – these and more you have become, through faith, through hope and love -- the ingredients of “forever.”

And like the grains of sand upon a beach, or the galaxies above -- both timeless, ageless and limitless -- so too your hearts and souls shall take their place among these precious treasures God bestowed.

My human heart betrayed me, and I cried for you last night.  My shattered soul could feel your joy, your peace, your grace.  And I grieved for the innocence of you and for all that was left undone and unsaid.

I cried for you last night.  For I realized that you are now yesterday, tomorrow and forever, while I dwell in today, with only memories of yesterday, dreams of tomorrow, and faith in forever.

I know your hearts and souls now light the path for those you’ve left behind, and they, like me, will follow where your light shall lead – to your Father’s house, where once again we’ll see your smiles, we’ll hear your voices and feel your hugs -- and then, we too shall touch the hand of God.
