Stefan and Fabien meet at the café two times, flirt. At the second meeting, Stefan drinks too much brandy, and they end up going to Fabien's rooms and having sex. Stefan leaves to seek nourishment
(find a victim to drink their blood) Third meeting at the café a few days later. Fabien has waited all day at the café for Stefan. Gets drunk, yet sobers up enough that Fabien and Stefan can visit
Fabien’s Cousin Geoffrey. Stefan escorts him home (and then to his room) on the pretense of safety, they have sex. Then Stefan turns Fabien into a vampire. Fabien’s servant Jacques intrudes, and
Fabien and Stefan drink his blood and kill him. Fabien is unwilling, but Stefan commands him. Fabien despairs. Stefan disposes of Jacque's body in the Seine. Stefan returns, explains to Fabien in
great detail what exactly a vampire is, and a vampire's abilities. Fabien and Stefan go to the opera. On the way back, they are approached by a thief; they kill the thief for his blood and Fabien’s
first blood feeding. Stefan and Fabien’s existence continues, and with that endless killings. Fabien’s feelings towards Stefan change, sensing Stefan’s cruelty and indiscriminate killing. Fabien
begs and pleads with Stefan to release him. Stefan agrees on one condition, to never make a vampire minion of his own. They part, Stefan orders Fabien to stay away from the café.
