HAVE WE LOST OUR IMAGINATION?

By Al Garcia

It seems that each day, we as an American society, continue to digress to a place and a time where human dignity, empathy and truth are viewed as treasonous and seditious in the new surreal “normal” that permeates our American governance.  The media is now perceived as being the “enemy of the State.”  Our government’s separation of powers between the Executive, Judiciary and Legislative branches is slowly but surely being crushed into disarray and even irrelevance.  Our most sacred and long respected institutions responsible for our national security, the FBI, the CIA, our Federal Courts and countless men and women bound by a selfless devotion to the ideals and ideas of our democracy, are being demeaned and humiliated on a daily basis by distorted and manufactured “memos” and conspiracies by the very men and women they are sworn to serve and obey.

The powerful words written in our Constitution, rich in meaning and essence, are slowly deteriorating and fading on the yellowed paper that laid the groundwork for our great American Experiment that has transformed the world.  Our Federal Executive, Judicial and Legislative officers solemnly swore to faithfully execute their respective offices “. . . to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Well, in the past several years something went terribly wrong.  Either they are all liars, or they never read our Constitution and do not fully understand that their loyalty is to the Nation as a whole, and not themselves or their political leader or party.

Our leaders, from the top down, set the tone of our national discourse.  Our leaders, from the top down, set the standards of conduct of our entire American society.  Our leaders, from the top down, are the face of America to a world seeking guidance, direction and leadership.  Shamefully, for four years, and for some, still continuing, our leaders have forsaken their leadership role to its citizenry and to the world.

The idea was even floated around about having our military display its might and armaments on the streets of our Nation’s capital.  Troops in uniform carrying weapons of death.  Military tanks rumbling in front of Congress, the Supreme Court and the White House.  Long sleek atomic missiles on trailers driven down Pennsylvania Avenue.  And, at the end of the parade our Commander in Chief, sitting in splendor, surrounded by generals and “yes” men and women, even Congressmen and Senators, who have abandoned their fidelity and their obligation to the Constitution and to the Nation.  It would have been a spectacle indeed!  A spectacle worthy of any third-world country and third-world leader.  Although not a spectacle worthy of America and the American people.  And yes, the world would watch such a pageant of power in awe and in horror – in horror because the world would know that American had taken yet another step toward degeneracy – and abandoning what had made American great – pride, decency, dignity and honor.

And so, we return to the beginning.  To a time when America led the world with its leadership, it’s modesty of strength, it’s dignity of humanity, and its humanitarian motivation and intervention.  Imagine a nation of leaders respectful of each other, regardless of party or ideology.  Imagine a day without hearing our leaders demean and degrade each other, or learning of yet another conspiracy involving political rivals or perceived political enemies.  Imagine a day without the paranoid and intrigue of politicians who have overstayed their welcome in the seat of power.

Imagine an American that is moving forward and looking to tomorrow -- building, growing, flourishing.  No tweets.  No lies.  No handlers trying to clarify misstatements.  No midnight meetings in dark alleys by individuals who have lost their way.  Just imagine the America that once made you proud.  Our forefathers imagined such an America.  Slowly, we are returning to that America.  However, why have so many lost their imagination?
