THE DAYS OF FOREVER

By Al Garcia

Lost to the past with unfinished lives and incomplete souls.  Lost to the days that never come -- soldiers of fate and warriors without cause, forever stilled.  Casualties of war and victims of deceit, forever shadows of the days that never come, but last forever.

And how do you embrace a shadow, lost in the darkness of days that never come?  How do you stop the torture that torments the unbroken bond that keeps the memories alive and each shared moment so potent and so palpable, so touchable, so real?

The sleepless nights.  The emptiness.  The ache and sadness that touches the heart and soul.  The denial.  The bargaining.  The endless unanswered prayers.  And through it all, the despair never stops and the anguish never ceases.

Too young my friends to have been denied the promise of a lifetime, and too pure their hearts and untainted their souls.  I have still not fully accepted the shock, the horror nor the numbness that assaulted my mind, my heart and my faith in those days of my youth that stole so many dreams and unleashed the floodgates of tears and of grief.  Those are the days that never seem to go away.  It is the silence left behind that has changed the rhythm and the measure of my life.

How I have lived and savored the many days that I have had.  How I always looked forward to tomorrows that always came.  And how I cherish and treasure the times of my life shared with a family of once strangers who never saw tomorrow -- but only the days of forever.

And I am lost in the past, at times, when we were young and felt invincible and invulnerable.  And when the tears begin to flow, I make myself remember that the days of forever keep the spirit and the memory alive.
