THE AGE OF MADNESS

By Al Garcia

It is the age of madness.  It is the age of idiocy and absurdity.  It is the age of our dreamless existence.  It is the dawning of the age of our irrelevancy and deflection.

It is the awakening of shadows long dormant and hidden, now roaming the night in search of minds, souls and hearts too weak to hear or feel the rumblings of the approaching harvesters and ravagers of dreams and of fantasies that once fueled the imagination and the passion of the human spirit.

One can sense the malaise that has overtaken the inspiration and motivation of past ages and bygone generations.  There is a tiredness that is consuming the idealism, zeal and virtue that once defined us and explained us as Americans and as human beings.

We have become a nation of sheep and voiceless disciples, where once we were a nation of robust patriots and advocates for dreamers, visionaries and romantics.  Gone is the fire that once burned intensely and fiercely in the American psyche.  Gone is the will to resist the worst of our inclinations and tendencies.

America is deteriorating into a nightmare of madness and mayhem, while we watch and tolerate as if in a trance.  The once invincible and unconquerable America, now on its knees, before an army of home-grown traitors, conspirators and connivers.  We were too busy saving the world, while our own nation rotted from within.

It is the age of madness.  It is the age of idiocy and absurdity.  And each day, the madness grows, and each day the ability to reign in the apocalyptic consequences lessen and crumble.  What happened to the American will and strength that had for centuries confronted the malevolence of men of evil and deceit?  Why have we given up, at the very moment it has reached into the very heart and soul of our America?

I watch in utter dismay as angry crowds fill our streets and spew hate-filled rhetoric, while carrying flags that bring back nightmares and memories of atrocities and cruelties, while flaunting weapons across their inflated chests to intimidate and coerce those of us who still believe in law and order, and the American way.

As an American and as a Veteran, I am appalled by the new voice that I hear echoing across our nation.  It is a voice foreign to me.  It speaks of hatred, intimidation, coercion, fear, bullying and threats.  It is a voice that challenges and threatens my American heritage and legacy.  It is a voice without a heart or soul.

And during this, the age of madness, I want to hear again, the voice that made me feel secure, safe and free.  I want to hear the words that once rang out across our land – our National anthem – America.  And I want to hear, clear and loud, the last lines of the anthem, which read:  “. . . And this be our motto: "In God is our trust:  And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

When will the madness stop?  Will we regain our strength to take back our nation from an army of home-grown traitors, conspirators and connivers?
