They were supposed to be here together. That was the plan. After the dust settled, after the rest of the world had moved on to other dramas, they’d meet up at their secret, special overlook point along the coast. But he hadn’t showed. Five days with no contact. No calls, no texts. Where was he? What could have happened?

Kara stared out at the expanse of gray and green before her. The sea in the distance looked as frantic as her worried mind and she retreated deeper into her grandmother’s shawl against the autumn wind and frigid rocks she’d foolishly chosen as seating for her vantage point.

They had planned for months and the job had gone smoothly with no complications. She was certain they hadn’t been seen on the security cameras. The adrenaline rush had been epic and they’d both been giddy at their success, giggling like teenagers, hands all over each other.

That last kiss before they’d gone their separate ways had been one for the ages. She’d remember it until the day she died. No one had ever made her feel so valued before and it shocked her to her core. He’d looked into her eyes and told her he loved her.

Tomas had taken two bags, placing one in the boot of her tiny Fiat and the other into the backseat of his larger, more luxurious Audi.

The inevitable crash had come sooner than expected. And now she found herself struggling with dark thoughts and self-doubt.

She stood and walked to the car on shaky legs. Opening the trunk, she reached for the duffel bag & slowly unzipped it. An envelope lay on top of what looked like newspapers. As she ripped it open, she already knew the words she’d find on the page.

“I’m sorry.”
