Children’s book illustrator & author Arnold Lobel whispers “damn” at his reflection in the window pane. The woman outside doesn’t hear him, of course. She doesn’t see him either, this rather small man with the big mustache and huge glasses. She has probably never really seen him, despite their 12-year marriage together. He is lonely. He is depressed. He thinks he might be gay. She sits on her favorite rock gazing into the vista beyond, her shawl wrapped tightly around her. She wonders what her life might've been like, if only... Arnold envisions her as a mouse; easier to understand this way. They both yearn for intimacy, yet do not dare. Arnold's poem comes easily. It's the love poem of an imprisoned heart that crashes like a rogue wave onto the rocks with the power of sudden enlightenment. Three simple lines is all it takes. Three simple lines are enough to know that this suffering must end, for them both.

"She listens to the waves resound. She gazes at the sea. If only she would turn around, and simply smile at me."
