A short story on the view of animals being hunted by the hunter

A soft breeze blew through the trees, rustling the brightly colored orange and red leaves. A few of them broke off from their branches, dancing in the wind as they slowly drifted down to rest on the forest floor. Long shadows stretched across the leaf coated ground as the sun began to shrink behind the tree tops. A mouse scuttled across the leaves the brittle material crunching beneath her small paws. the small brown creature stopped, standing on her hind legs. The long whiskers protruding from her snout twitched as she raised her nose, sniffing the air.

The mouse's eyes laid on an acorn that was sitting next to an old rotten log. She bounded her way up to the nut, lifting it up into her tiny paws and beginning to chew her way into its hard shell. As the mouse enjoyed her meal she was unaware of the glowing yellow eyes in the brush behind her. there was a flash of fiery orange as a large fox leapt from his cover, snatching the mouse up in his powerful jaws. The fox quickly demolished the small creature, licking his scarred muzzle.

As the fox sat there, savoring the memory of his meal the sound of baying could be heard in the distance. His long black tipped ears twitched as he recognized the noise to belong to one of the things that all of the creatures in the forest feared.

A hunter.

The fox sprung to his feet and bolted, weaving through the undergrowth, his eyes scanning for a place to hide. The fox splashed through a creek and pushed his way up a bank.

There!

A crack in a large boulder that was just big enough for the fox to squeeze his way through. He ran around the rock four times before running back to the bank and then back to the rock, hoping to cover his trail enough to confuse the hunter's beasts. he fox squeezed his way into the crack, flattening himself against the back.

He could hear the hounds running around outside, seemingly losing the fox's scent. THe fox's heart thumped against his chest as he hoped that his plan worked. The hunter barked something to the dogs in an unknown language.

Then there was silence. It was as is the hunter and his hounds had disappeared all together. The fox didn't dare move.

The silence seemed to last forever. All the while the fox barely moved, barely breathed.

Then the silence was broken as a deep growl came from just outside the crack's entrance. A muzzle pushed its ay through the hole as long, pointed, yellowing teeth snapped at the fox. He pushed himself against the hard rock surface, his body just inches from the mouth.

The dog was pulled away as a long silver cylinder was pushed into the hole, pressing against the fox and pinning him there.

The fox's heart raced against his chest.

He knew what the gun did.
