There was a time and place not long ago where once dreams lived and thrived. A place guarded by the vigilance of sacrificed lives, abandoned innocence and shattered dreams. A place where fields of stone and seas of tears defy the sorrow and the pain to keep alive the spirit and the force that shed its light so bright upon the darkness that threatened to prevail.

WHERE ONCE DRAMS LIVED

By Al Garcia

There was a time and place not long ago where once dreams lived and thrived.  A place guarded by the vigilance of sacrificed lives, abandoned innocence and shattered dreams.  A place where fields of stone and seas of tears defy the sorrow and the pain to keep alive the spirit and the force that shed its light so bright upon the darkness that threatened to prevail.

There was a time when the power of words like truth, integrity, unity, compassion and empathy, defined and explained the people and the nation that we were.  We were once a place that reflected the essence of our greatness and our prominence among the powers and the multitudes that sought to imitate the character and nature of our success.

Now, where once upon a time dreams lived and thrived, there now exists the withering, gasping and fading remnants of a democracy that clings to the vestiges of its past.  Besieged by raiders from within, our America is on the verge of suicide and extinction.  What world wars, armies and fanatics, famines and disasters of every kind and type had failed to do, there is one man now poised to end the dream.

Our men, young and old, have fought and died on foreign lands protecting us from the evils and the threats of those determined to demean and obliterate the foundation of our strength.  Never had they thought, nor I, that the enemy would come from within.  To now see the effects of homegrown hate, bigotry, greed, apathy and aberrance left to fester and grow amidst the grandeur of our history, defies the wisdom and the sanity of our existence.

One man has harvested the worst of us and exposed the vilest part of our humanity.  And now those that helped usher in the rule of hate and lies and apathy, gather at democracy’s gate with spikes and torches ready to destroy and burn the living instruments and institutions that have defined our lives and outlined the course of our history since the founding of our nation.  And we continue to watch in utter dread as one by one the tiers of our democracy are weakened, dismantled and destroyed.  It is the dawning of the age of idiocy and absurdity, with we the people played as helpless fools, and left to grieve upon the ashes of the normalcy that we had come to know and cherish.

We are witnesses to the demise of the rule of law and the protection of the innocent and the weak.  We are willing accomplices to our self-destruction, and yet no one has the courage of those that once fought and died in wars and battles across the globe to protect and defend against the tyranny we face.  And I weep for our nation as it lies in the throes of writing its final chapter of its history.

I remember so vividly where once dreams lived.  It was a place called America, home of the brave and of the free.
