Today flags were flying high, as Americans remembered its fallen heroes. It was a day to pay tribute and respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for duty, honor, country. “DEMOCRACY IN PERIL”

(Memorial Day, May 31, 2021)

By Al Garcia

Today flags were flying high, as Americans remembered its fallen heroes.  It was a day to pay tribute and respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for duty, honor, country.  And today, President Joe Biden stated that our democracy was in peril, adding that “What we do now, how we honor the memory of the fallen, will determine whether democracy will long endure.”  Harrowing words that explain and define this moment in our history.

His words exposed, once again, the outrageous anti-American shenanigans being perpetrated in the halls of Congress and in State Houses across our nation, that is putting our democracy in jeopardy.  The insurrection failed, but the determination and resolve to overthrow and topple almost 250 years of democratic rule continues.  And I ask myself, how can Americans continue to tolerate the insolence and total disrespect by leaders tasked with upholding and supporting our Constitution and our form of government?  How can leaders sympathetic to the insurgency and to a renegade ex-President continue to serve, if they do not believe in the very process they are supposed to be working in and through?  It is a profanity of their character and their principles, or lack thereof.

America is a nation of character, ideals and traditions.  It is a nation conceived and nurtured by ordinary men and women of substance and courage, and by heroes who fought and sacrificed to keep alive the dream that is America.  That is what today is all about.

And today, when I drove through my neighborhood, I saw American flags waving high and proud.  Unfortunately, I noticed that many of those flags were been flown by diehard Trump supporters.  The same individuals who supported the insurrection, and the same people who are supportive of the voter suppression legislation taking place across our nation by Republican-run Legislatures.  And, most troubling, was the fact that they were flying the same flag that the insurrectionists used as weapons during the insurrection on January 6th, our American flag.

Now, here they are, flying the American flag in front of their homes.  How offensive.  How insulting to true Americans and to the heroes we honored today.  I drove through my neighborhood in disgust, knowing the true character and nature of people I knew to be supporting the downfall of our democratic form of government.  And as a Veteran, I felt even more offended.  Have they no shame?

There was such arrogance and idiocy on display today by those seeking to see our nation fall.  Counterfeit patriots, one and all.  Our country is about patriots -- men and women of character, strength, wisdom and courage.  Like those we honor today.  Not flag-waving hypocrites who have abandoned their duty, their honor, their country.
