AMERICA, TIRED AND EXHAUSTED

By Al Garcia

I hear the sound of discontent as I see the crumbling and collapsing structures of our greatness tumble into the dustbin of history and into oblivion.  I hear the muted voices of reason and of credence drowned by the repulsive cult-like chants of treachery and betrayal.  And I see the emerging face of evil and hate rise from the ashes of patriots, of champions and of heroes, who sacrificed body and soul for an idea and for ideals greater than themselves.

I am stymied by the silence, the hesitancy and the wavering vacillation by those that profess to protect, defend and support the very foundation of our eminence and significance as a nation and as a people, be them Democrats, Republicans, Independents, or of any other political persuasion.  Once upon a time, I remember when Americans of all persuasions spoke with one voice and one purpose when confronted with the possibility of a cataclysm of any type or form – we united to protect America and the American spirit.

Today, I see America shattered, tired, exhausted and traumatized, but most of all dumbfounded by the apparent mutilation of the ideals, and the attempted obliteration of the humanity that was America and that united Americans.

I remember seeing Americans coming together for America in war and in peace, when now I see too many Americans coming together for one man, and not America.  America was never about one person or one man.  I remember when America was about "we the people" – people of all colors, all religions, and from all over the world – the melting pot of humanity – and together we made it work and made America great.

Now I see and hear a different America. An America where division and diversion have replaced unity and purpose.  An America where ideas and ideals have been cast aside in place of greed, arrogance and power.  And I see an America dying before my eyes, as the rhetoric and acts of hate, bigotry, racism and evil begins to take root in the heart and soul of those that have betrayed themselves and betrayed America.

As a veteran, I fought alongside friends and strangers, to uphold and protect the American ideals of freedom, liberty and justice for all.  Many, including some of my friends, were sacrificed in bloody battles.  Never would we have thought that we were fighting to allow one man to disregard the very idea of our government and our governance, or to allow one man to ignore every basic tenet of our democracy.  Never. And yet here we are. America -- one man with one idea and no ideals.  Everything American soldiers and veterans and ordinary citizens ever fought for or supported – principles, morals, ethics, integrity – gone.

We were a proud and strong nation, made up of idealist, optimists, romantics and dreamers.  Now, we are a nation divided and obsessed with one man and his mission to remake America in his image. An obsession like this never ends well.  History has already taught us that, time and again.

It scares me, and it betrays my service and the sacrifices of my friends and the many who never returned to the America they loved.
