A simple story that happened during covid outbreak.
A reminder to others to cherish every moment with loved ones.

I was wondering what was life? As I sat here on top of this hill staring at the horizon laid out in front of me, with his favorite green shawl wrapped around me and my own favorite orange pants. He complimented me once and I had always love it since. He was the one who washed away my anxieties and reaffirms me.

Yet too short, was his life, abruptly stopped.

I can see the days gradually slipping away from us. There was the notification first from the government application that told us, he was in close contact with another covid patient. He went alone to get tested and we were glad, it appeared negative.

I was happy beyond words.

However, on that same day. He fainted suddenly. I thought he was joking around like he used to do but it was real. I called for an ambulance, and it came and sent him away. I could not even follow him into the hospital due to the restrictions placed in times of covid.

Later, the doctors told me; he was diagnosed with late stages of colon cancer. It came as a shocked. He had been complaining about his bowel movement. I just brushed it off and said, “It’s just constipation. Eat more vegetables.”

It is too late for regret now as he went for surgery and attended sessions of chemotherapy. His condition got worse, and he was admitted alone at the hospital. I was with him all the way, until his last breath, as I watched, across the cold screen of his phone as he looked at the evening sky in his green shawl.

I could not even hold his hand as he passed.

This is not a story about covid, but illness and separation that still happened during these times. And, to serve as a reminder for us to appreciate those close to us.

In remembrance to a friend’s sister who passed away due to cancer as at 31/05/2021
