Courage

Have you ever been so depressed that you wanted to end your life?

My name is Sarah. I’m 32. I’m not married. I don’t have any friends much-less a boyfriend. I don’t trust anyone.

My parents died in a car crash when I was 10. Without living relatives, I was placed in Foster Care where my foster father repeatedly raped me until I ran away at 13, ultimately ending up in my second foster home. That wasn’t much better but at least rape wasn’t on the daily menu. Two more foster homes were in my destiny until I left the system at 18.

I can’t afford a therapist for my depression so here I am stuck on this mountaintop after getting lost while wandering in the woods from a rest stop about 20 miles from town. Today, I had a simple mission, to end my nightmares, pain, and misery.

I don’t know how long I was sitting there but it was as good a place as any to die. Wearing an old, tattered teal wrap; the only memory I had left of my mother, I pulled the gun from my left pocket and rested it on my leg. Nightfall was quickly approaching. It was time.

Putting a death grip on the weapon, I lifted my head and looked out over the incredible splendor of the valley below and the blue Pacific beyond. A puff of sweet balsam swept up from the valley awakening me from my self-inflicted trance… “Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Stop letting others control your life. Everyone has problems. I’m no different. My foster agonies cannot rule my future, my life. I WILL make something of my life.”

Standing, I threw the gun, took a deep breath, and with new courage, began for home.
