LEAN ON ME

By Al Garcia

I am a reflection of you, disguised in the image of a friend.

I can sense your beating heart as you console a mourning soul, grieving for his fallen son.  I can hear the sound of your faltering voice uttering words to comfort him as he tries to understand the callousness of war as he sits by a flag-draped casket bearing the remains of a shattered dream.

I can detect your inability to explain the cruelty, mindlessness and madness that condones smothering a young man’s illusions.  And I see you gaze past the grieving faces of family and friends to a panorama of simple white crosses precisely placed in a field of fallen dreams.

And it is then that I see a tear begin to glisten in your eye, your head begins to bow and your shoulders start to stoop.  And in that moment your hand reaches out and grasps a shoulder without hesitancy or concern.

It is the shoulder of a friend who has always been there, whether you knew it not.  It is me.  You only had to reach out to touch it to know that I was there.

The beauty of true friendship is to understand and be understood, without having to utter a single word.  Your hand on my shoulder says it all.
