TWLIGHT OF THE AGE OF IDIOCY

By Al Garcia

Are we at our twilight of the age of idiocy?

America has evolved and progressed through many ages in our history.  Each generation an inspiration to the next.  Each period in our celebrated saga marked in some fashion by extraordinary accomplishments and by the eloquence of declarations and proclamations by American leadership that inspired and motivated the masses and the world.

From the infancy of our colonization, through the growing pains of Washington, Adams and Jackson.  From the westward expansion and America’s manifest destiny, to the fields at Gettysburg and the era of reconstruction.  From the Roaring Twenties, prohibition and the stewardship of Teddy Roosevelt, to the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall.  We were all there witnessing the maturing majesty of America’s power, intellect and grace.

There was also the Era of Good Feeling, reigned over by James Monroe and the idea of Camelot, during the John Kennedy era -- both highlighting all that was good about America.  There was the Civil Rights Movement and the Great Society, and certainly there was the Age of Reagan, Reaganomics and his conservative movement whose ideas dominated national policy-making in aeras such as taxes, welfare, defense, the federal judiciary and the Cold War. Great men with great ideas, and with the ability to bring dreamers and visionaries together.

Those were the great days of America.  Ages and eras in our American history that helped define the character and the nobility of our nation.

And today, we find ourselves in the Age of Idiocy, ruled over by a rogue ex-President and his followers, who cannot see beyond their own reflection.  Instead of the thinkers and visionaries they used to be, they have become disembodied caricatures of what was inspired and motivated a nation.  They continue to sputter the notion that their continued dismantlement of the very structure of our democracy, and their unfettered control and rule without question or challenge, is the path of a new America.  Unfortunately, it is a path well-travelled by others, that ends in chaos, destruction and the death of the human spirit.

Optics and words that are defining this new Age of Idiocy are porn stars, vulgarity, immorality, greed, and words like “hoax,” “fake news,” “witch hunt” and “lock her up.”  The Age of Idiocy will not be known for any great declaration or proclamation, nor will it be remembered for any altruistic or humanitarian endeavor.  Instead, it will be recalled as America’s digression into the twilight zone -- where up was down, greatness meant failure, white trumped black, evil replaced good, and hate overcame love.  But most of all, it will be known as a time when elections were fraudulent, and when votes were fabricated or “imported” from foreign lands.  A time when the people’s choice and the people’s voice was drowned out and stomped out by unhinged and irrational minds.

With the world on the verge of physical and mental collapse, America’s Age of Idiocy has the prospect of succeeding.  The lies the deceit, the greed and the intimidation is taking hold of the minds and hearts of many Americans.  The MAGA and QAnon movements have merged, and they have opened the floodgates to liars, falsifiers, fraudsters, swindlers, deceivers, supremacists, and even Congressmen and Senators, who have all sold their souls for a brief dance with the devil.

We are in the twilight of the Age of Idiocy, as we patiently and silently watch truth die, and compassion, empathy and kindness wane and wither, in the very land once known for its understanding, benevolence and responsiveness to its citizens and to the world.

Now, we only wait.  And time is not on our side.
