FAITH BECOMES US

By Al Garcia

Every human being shares one trait, one quality, one characteristic that unites and connects one with the other, regardless of color, race, nationality or origin.  It is the deep-rooted notion of trust and hope – better known and understood as faith.

It is shared trust and hope that binds the family of man.  It is the blossoming of hope that inspires the human heart.  And it is the seed of trust implanted in the sprouting mind of man that calms the clashing tides of disparities and discrepancies that fall and rise among the tribes and spheres of influence that dominate and reign.

It is faith that quells and soothes the errant heart and soul of man.  Faith is unique in everyone.  It is a belief in the ability to reflect, to reason, to sense and to imagine. Faith grows and flourishes with each passing season.  Faith emboldens, encourages, reassures and bolsters us to reach beyond the ordinary.  Faith vitalizes the human instinct to persevere and to embrace the fellowship of our fellow man.

It is only when we are separated and parted into religious sects and cliques and factions, that our faith becomes a weapon against the very heart of each of us.  The very trust and hope that once empowered and united us, now divides us, simply because of a religious designation or association.

How strange to have the same faith or belief in hope and trust, and yet to be divided into a million parts.  How strange to think and feel and hurt like everyone who shares a faith in hope and trust like you, and then be told to keep away because of a label placed on faith.  Christian, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism – to name just a few.  Religions based on the same notion – trust and hope – a thing called faith.

We should not let names or labels divide us.  Faith is universal and unanimous, even in those of us with little faith.  For even atheists have faith in not believing in God.  And that in itself is witness to the power of faith in everyone.

Without faith -- the ability to trust and to hope – which ignites our humanity and our compassion, we would not have touched the stars, nor reached the heights of our abilities and our destiny.

Faith needs no name, no cathedral, basilica, church, synagogue, mosque or alters of any kind.  Faith only needs an open mind and an open heart, and the rest comes naturally.
