In Detroit, you had the polished style, tight lyrics and dance moves that made Motown Records famous. Like a fine Cadillac coming off an assembly.
In Memphis, there was another record company, Stax. Their sound was more gritty, rougher, funky soul.
A smaller record label than Motown, they had a stable of artists who go toe to toe with their Motown rivals.

With King Curtis making his famous MEMPHIS SOUL STEW, Booker T and the MG's are adding their GREEN ONIONS to the pot

Jean Knight comes into the kitchen to get a wiff of that stew. "MR. BIG STUFF, who do you think you are with your soul stew"

Carla Thomas takes one look at Otis Redding and calls him TRAMP. Straight out of the Georgia woods

"Woman!" I've been SITTING ON THE DOCK OF THE BAY writing my next number one hit. Don't spoil my appetite

RESPECT YOURSELF hollars the Staple Singers as they break the two up

Aretha Franklin chimes in with her own words of RESPECT

With the football game on the tv, Mel and Tim notice the BACKFIELD IN MOTION

No one is gonna give Isaac Hayes the SHAFT. He's one mean moutherfu....

"Shut your mouth!" say the Staple Singers

"I"m just writing about Isaac"

"We can dig it"

As the meal is about to commence, from down the street, Sam and Dave can be heard yelling, HOLD ON, I'M COMING

Johnnie Taylor nudges Albert King and asks, WHO'S MAKING LOVE to your old lady while you were out making love

Albert King says, "I don't know, but I WAS BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN

The Bar-Kays come by wanting to stick their SOUL FINGER into the pot

"I don't think so. I got just the right amount of soul in my MEMPHIS SOUL STEW King Curtis says

Rufus King comes running into the kitchen asking, "Am I late for the eats? I was WALKING THE DOG"

Some great music here 88, my favourite was Go Now that was covered by the Moody Blues and a big hit for them. I'm not sure not what record label that came from originally.
