She sat among the rocky crags gazing down the hillside. The cool breeze whisking up the landscape sent a shiver across her shoulders. She gathered the ends of her shawl tighter to her chest. She waited. And she wondered. What was delaying his return?

The goats bleated from the shed behind her. They waited for their ration of oats. The chickens gave up waiting for their supper and nested down for the night. Shadows crept up the walls of the cottage waiting for a fire to be lit in the hearth. The homestead waited for his return.

The woman was worried. Had he met with an accident, could he be hurt or worse? Or had he merely stopped off at the pub for a mug of ale in the village. Perhaps, that sassy redhead in the Pub had finally succeeded in tempting him with her bosoms practically falling out of her tattered blouse. Maybe, he ran off to start a new life.  Who could blame him? There wasn’t much glamour in living on top of this mountain. Hard work day after day and not much reward for your effort. Except, the satisfaction of knowing you were building a life on your own land or were free to leave and try something else. And that is what worried her most.

Had she scared him off? They talked about starting a family. But now that she was expecting a baby, maybe the responsibility was too much for him. What would become of her without him? And how would she raise a child all alone? A tear stung in her eye.

Then she heard a familiar whistle being carried on the breeze. Coming up the hillside he walked slowly next to his limping horse. She smiled. He was coming home.
