The trail up the mountain was smooth from wear, but steep. The cold air cut through her cloak but her exertions kept her warm. It was up here, in the high peaks that she could best remember her times with him.

Watching the road below, waiting for a caravan that never comes. They had come through the village long ago, on their way to who knows where. She remembered that day on the street when their eyes first met. It was as if they already knew. Destiny had put them together for a short time and then pried them apart. The loss was overwhelming. Other men had tried to make her forget, and sometimes she could for a while. but they all failed eventually. A new love would appear and she could forget for a while, but any little reminder of the past would bring a new flood of loss.

Movement down below caught her eyes. Someone was approaching the lookout but not by the path. At the moment she could only see a dark head of hair bobbing between the trees. As he got closer, something felt familiar. And every step closer raised her hopes higher. He looked up and their eyes met. Then she knew. It was him and there was only one reason for him to make this journey. He had learned of her upcoming wedding. He took her in his arms, looked deep into her eyes and she melted inside. He asked her, “Can he say, 'My love for you is eternal and unconditional'? Will he tell you how pretty you are? How lucky he is to have you? How he can't live without you. Lying on his death bed, will the last word he speaks be your name?
