Helplessness

By Al Garcia

Living in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas has not isolated or segreated us from witnessing the disintegrating bedrock of our politics, our constitution and our morality and nobility.

The dynamics of America falling prey to the age-old tactic of divide and conquer seemed an impossible and improbable likelihood.  However, the intoxication of power and greed that has enslaved and subjugated people and nations throughout the history of civilization, seems to have seeped into the very fabric of our national morality, exposing and slashing the ties that bound us.

Our feeling of helplessness is not the reality of the revelation of what occurred, but rather learning of the ingenuity and cunningness of the assault.  It was the simplicity of the rallies, the slogans, the brashness, and the rallying cries of “Lock her Up,” that stirred the imagination of the marginalized and disillusioned.  It was seeing the ease with which ordinary citizens were roused and incited, and turn into maddening crowds.  The tactics were all well-tested and proven -- divide the populous by color, ethnicity, religion, social status, education and of course, political persuasion.

There was a “shot heard around the world” that commenced the American Revolution.  This time around, there were no shots, no cannons firing, or young men dying.  Instead, there were only words.  Words that demeaned us.  Words that humiliated us.  Words that tarnished us.  And words that brought out the hidden and smoldering prejudices among us.  No,  No shot was fired this time around.  Instead, the world heard the silence of a nation’s capitulation to well-managed and well-calculated manipulation of malleable minds and callous hearts.

And the flames of division and exclusion, omission and disharmony continue to be fanned, not only among ourselves, but among our friends and allies across the globe.

Helplessness - a sense of weakness, powerlessness, vulnerability.  The new definition of what it feels like to be an American.
