I look across the Rio Grande and see a different world. I see a bleak and uninviting horizon beyond the water’s edge. So close, and yet so far. Like a brilliant star that I can almost reach up and touch, yet a million miles or years away. The horizon illusory. The reality before me.

BEYOND THE HORIZON

By Al Garcia

I look across the Rio Grande and see a different world.  I see a bleak and uninviting horizon beyond the water’s edge.  So close, and yet so far.  Like a brilliant star that I can almost reach up and touch, yet a million miles or years away.  The horizon illusory.  The reality before me.

Like a shadow that fades into the night, so too the water’s edge blends into the horizon beyond.  The quiet, meandering waters of the Rio Grande, deceiving with its calm and gentle current, obscuring the great divide, like the unreachable star that shines so bright in the northern sky.  So close ,and yet so far.

The spirit and the strength of man is to look at the horizon before him and beyond.  We were once a nation beyond the horizon of many dreamers.  Yet, although only a dream, someone saw beyond the horizon and the dream, to be more, to do more, to became a beacon to the world, and those looking for their own horizons.

I live in a land of unobstructed horizons of possibilities, prospects, and of promises of things yet to be.  I want to see beyond the bleakness and the helplessness across the water’s edge, and not just see a lost horizon.  I want those that stand across from me along their water’s edge, to see the brilliance of our beacon.  I want the tired, the poor, the huddled masses who yearn to breathe free, the homeless, and the wretched refuse, to see a new horizon beyond their water’s edge.  Just like we did, so many years ago, so that they too can make their dreams come true.
