LIKE A SCREAM IN THE NIGHT

By Al Garcia

I hear thunder in the distance, like a scream in the night.

The sound astounds me from the revelry of my dreams, like an unexpected pain, sharp and deep.

The scream becomes a rumble, and then I hear raindrops on the windowpane.  Soothing.  Comforting.  Deceiving.

The thundering screams become a chorus of light and sound, lighting up the evening sky, displaying nature’s majesty, dominance and wrath.

I hear thunder in the distance and am awed by its energy and force.  The sound, the fury, the rage, decries the frailty and witless nature of the human race.

And like a scream in the night, it touches the very core of me, and arouses the fear of the power that lurks beyond the vastness and the coldness of the dark that consumes the night.

And I am that little boy again, who imagines shadows that scream in the night, and visions of fiery specters that light up the sky.  And the fading echo of rumbling thunder, like music of the night, stirring awake the ghosts of fragile minds and unformed souls.

I hear thunder in the distance, like a scream in the night, lost in the darkness of time.
