THE SPOT

by Michael Fairman

She sat quietly looking down into the valley, the Fall colors muted by the fading

light. A sudden chill forced her to pull the wrap more tightly around her shoulders.

She would soon have to leave. These were the last the last few hours she had given herself. Twelve years now distilled into just a few hours.  She wanted to linger until the last moment, so the mountain and its valley would be etched into her memory. She remembered his words on that first day, His laugh. Her stumble. His helping her to her feet. She remembered their hikes along the trail,  leading to “the spot”. This spot. Even when she was getting huge with Marissa. Then the four of them, Robbie whining it was “too hard”. Birthdays. Christmas, Homework. Laughter. These were the years of sunny days. even when it rained. Then the days darkened with secrets. One year. Two years. The sunny days beckoning her to stay. Her love beckoning her. Her children beckoning her. They were at school. He was at work. The air was still warm in the mid morning, when she hiked to “the spot”.  Now it was turning cold. She shuddered and pulled the wrap even tighter. The children would soon be back from school.
