Long back, there was a Zen Master, named Nonin. Once, there came a man to him, who had done a lot of study and research on Buddhism, which he continued till now. He had come to learn Zen from the Master. Before the Master could say anything, the man began boasting, “Master, I am a professor. I have done a lot of research on Buddhism and have written many books, some of which are quite popular."

The Master kept listening to him and then left to make a cup of tea. When the tea was ready, the Master began pouring the tea in the cup for the man. He didn’t stop when the cup was full but kept pouring the tea spilling it out.

Suddenly, the man shouted, “Stop Master. The cup is full. You can’t put more tea in it.”

The Master smiled and told, “Gentleman, you are just like this cup. Your mind is so full of ideas that if I taught you Zen, it won’t accept it but will spill it out. First, you empty the cup of mind of all the ideas to make enough space. Then, you will accept what I will teach you about Zen. We can’t learn new things unless we prepare ourselves by emptying the cups of our minds of old ideas.”

Good story. You made your point with simple words in few lines. We can't believe in some kind of dogma and expect to develop our understanding.

Thanks, leilajoon for your nice comments. Yes, you are right. We have to give up our old dogmas in order to learn something new.
