HAVE YOU EVER LOOKED BEHIND THE MASK?

By AL Garcia

There is always the smile and the laughter, and the twinkle in the eyes.  Uttered words confirm the joy and zeal that life bestowed -- a vision of the rhapsody of existence on display to be viewed and observed, and even envied by some.  A life on display that veils a heart and soul betrayed.

We have become accustomed to the mask that people see.  We have become accustomed to the smile and the laughter that conceals the pretense and disguise, that lies beneath the fabricated veil that hides the blemishes and scars.  We are the only ones who can look behind our mask and see and feel the essence of who we really are.  And at times we look at ourselves in the mirror, and cannot recognize the face we see.

Our mask conceals the weakness that we may feel, or the sadness we may have felt, or the hurt we may have caused, or the love we may have had and lost.  As free and open as we may feel, or think we are, there is that part of us that we keep behind the mask.  It is the shield our soul provides to protect and to defend against unwanted pity, shame or sympathy.

However, there are those intermittent moments, when we drop our mask and let our soul display our true face.  A momentary lapse perhaps, but revealing nonetheless.  And then, the mask comes on again, and we become the person behind the mask again.  Comfortable, and safe again.

We are not born with a soul that can be seen.  It is within our very being for a specific reason.  You can share your heart, but your soul is yours alone, unique in every way, and only you know what it looks like, and what it may contain or lack.

And so, the mask we wear defines and outlines the person we may want to be, but it never reveals the person that you are inside, until you let others look behind the mask.

The question now occurs to me, how many of us have taken the time to look behind the mask?
