Long gone from the fringes and edges that defined the boundaries of my life as a young and naïve boy, I returned home as a man, to find an unfamiliar landscape filled with unfamiliar faces.

IT IS FAMILY

By Al Garcia

Long gone from the fringes and edges that defined the boundaries of my life as a young and naïve boy, I returned home as a man, to find an unfamiliar landscape filled with unfamiliar faces.

Gone were the remnants of my past.  Gone was the sheltering refuge of family and friends, long disbursed, like shafts of wheat on a windy day.

Swaying palms now replaced the fields of cotton, corn and sugarcane that once abound throughout the humid Valley by the Rio Grande.

Instead, I find new sounds and sights, and a vista beyond the Rio Grande that beckons the new, the young, the future.

And amidst the freshness of new faces and new places, I began to sense the presence of the twine that bound me to the Valley such a long time ago -- a sense of heritage, tradition, legacy.

I have learned, as time will teach us all, that it is family that binds the heart and sooths a wondering soul.

It is family. I am back to where I once belonged.
