KILLING US SLOWLY WITH THEIR WORDS

By Al Garcia

Playing us deftly and ably.  Stringing us along.  Telling their base what they want to hear, not what the truth reveals.   Killing us slowly with their words.  Sapping our will to resist with unceasing chatters and blathers of slanders and slurs and untruths.  Killing us slowly with their words.

The promise of a revolution of change.  A red cap with a catchy phrase, and shouts of “Lock her up” and “Stop the Steal,” energized a nation and enthralled the world.  Power to the people, but with white fists raised, not black, not brown.  Drain the swamp.  Suppress the press.  Fake news.  Alternative facts.  The words captivated, and mesmerized the throngs that gathered beneath the tent.

Like circus barkers outside the tent, luring the curious to see the bearded lady or two-headed snake, people like McConnell, Hawley, Cruz, Graham, Rubio, and others like McCarthy and Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene, to name just a few, keep reinventing and re-explaining the words and the actions of the main attraction under the tent – to overthrow the government and steal a nation.  A one tent production soon became a three-ring circus, and the handlers just keep throwing out peanuts and candy-coated words to the crowds inside, to distract and entertain, not to inform.

Playing us deftly and ably.  Stringing us along.  Telling the base what they want to hear, not what the truth reveals.  Killing us slowly with their words.  Sapping our will to resist, with unceasing chatters and blathers of slanders and slurs.  Killing us slowly with their words.

Slipups and blunders, lapses in memory, absolute gaffes, and even accusations of sexual offenses, confirmed and recorded, quickly discharged and denied, as fake news, falsehoods and witch hunts.  Cheating and deceiving hard working men of a few lousy bucks, or fleecing and swindling, proclaiming insolvency more times than not, their leader decreeing himself to be the King of Debt, they continue to maintain and attract an unwavering base, like flies to a lightbulb on a hot summer night.

Playing us deftly and ably.  Stringing us along.  Telling their base what they want to hear, not what the truth reveals.   Killing us slowly with their words.  Sapping our will to resist with unceasing chatters and blathers of slanders and slurs.   Killing us slowly with their words

And when the lights went out and the tent was pulled down, and the circus barkers scurried into the shadows of the night, the spectacle began.  Like a morning after hangover, I awake from a long night’s foray into absurdity, and find myself exposed, alone, and wondering, what happened the night before?  And then, slowly, the pieces begin to fall together.  And it is a new day in America, and I am befuddled by the idiocy of what the Republican Party is doing and why.

Playing us deftly and ably.  Stringing us along.  Telling their base what they want to hear, not what the truth reveals.   Killing us slowly with their words.  Sapping our will to resist with unceasing chatters and blathers of slanders and slurs.   Killing us slowly with their words.

Like witnesses to an accident on a freeway, we listen quietly, as if rubbernecking, to get a glimpse of the carnage left behind in the hallways and corridors of the People’s House.  But day in and day out, seven days a week, we are bombarded by images and words exposing the bedlam behind the walls of power.  Day in and day out, a torrent of words and no action to move our nation forward – just derisiveness, disdainful actions and words, debasing and defiling of our constitution and our democratic process – pierce the essence of the American psyche and world curiosity.

Like watching old-time Friday night boxing on televisions, way back when.  Each Friday we awaited the debacle that always arrived.  We now see it and hear it, six to seven nights a week.  The Republican handlers and facilitators who exacerbate the situation, openly touting their anti-democratic stance, without concern, without shame.  “Kill democracy,” “Stop the Vote,” now the Republican Party platform, when once it helped to lay the foundation for rise of great democracy.  How I long for the silence of the outright fallacious rhetoric, and for a stress-free reprieve from the insaneness around us.   Give silence a chance!  Give commotion a rest!

Playing us deftly and ably.  Stringing us along.  Telling their base what they want to hear, not what the truth reveals.   Killing us slowly with his words.  Sapping our will to resist with unceasing chatters and blathers of slanders and slurs.   Killing us slowly with their words.

Listening to great orators is like enjoying a great opera or enjoying a great performer deliver a great performance on Broadway - they command the words they sing or speak.  A great master of words can calm a heavy heart, inspire a nation, or alter the course of world affairs.  Today I cringe when I see or listen to the abuse of the power of words emanating from the mouths of the puppets of chaos.  It is disheartening and discouraging to see the decline of the graciousness of correctness, civility and politeness.  I wince at the thought of what the next generation is learning from the words being uttered, and the flagrant actions to obstruct and destroy.

Playing us deftly and ably.  Stringing us along.  Telling their base what they want to hear, not what the truth reveals.   Killing us slowly with his words.  Sapping our will to resist with unceasing chatters and blathers of slanders and slurs.   Killing us slowly with their words.

And when the music stops, our flag will come down, our voice will be silent, and our dreams will fade into the darkness of the night, like shadows without faces.  History has chronicled before, the fall of kingdoms, of nations, of peoples.

And counterfeit leaders, like McConnell, Hawley, Cruz, Graham, Rubio, and others, like McCarthy, Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene, will join the ranks of reviled and abhorrent villains and rogues in our history books, who lost their vision and nobility for the momentary and elusive human weakness -- power and greed.

Killing us slowly with their words, until their madness destroys the sound of liberty that once tolled for us.
