I remember watching documentary footage of throngs of people standing before such monstrosities as Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Idi Amin and Francisco Franco, to name just a few, being cheered and hailed for the hatred, bigotry and fanaticism they embraced. Every vile word seemed to empower the crowd, and every clenched fist raised in support, appeared to embolden and further enrage the hordes of patriots of their regimes.

COUNTERFEIT PATRIOTS

By Al Garcia

I remember watching documentary footage of throngs of people standing before such monstrosities as Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Idi Amin and Francisco Franco, to name just a few, being cheered and hailed for the hatred, bigotry and fanaticism they embraced.  Every vile word seemed to empower the crowd, and every clenched fist raised in support, appeared to embolden and further enrage the hordes of patriots of their regimes.

I thought this was history.  I thought it was a chronicle of a different time and a different place.  I thought it was a sight that I would never see or experience in my lifetime in America.  After all, America is (or was) a country conceived of liberty and justice for all.  A country born of immigrants fleeing intolerance, injustice, prejudices and inequality.

And now, here I sit.  Transfixed by the sound and fury of throngs of fellow Americans, still supporting and listening to our former President.  Cheering and hailing his words of hatred, bigotry, intolerance and false suggestions and implications.  I hear the shouts of “Lock her up,” “Enemy of the State,” “fake news,” “deep state,” and “Stop the steal,” and I see and feel history coming back to life.  This time in our own backyard.

It is our American patriots, whose passion and fervor we have revered for generations, and tried to emulate.  Each generation has passed the torch of freedom to the next, knowing that the flame would continue to light and enlighten the world.  Today, the flame of freedom’s torch is flickering with the wind of change, and the darkening of our American spirit.

Good men and women of all ages have heard the words of change, and have been mesmerized by the Pied Piper of illusions and delusions, just like the throngs before them, who stood before the monstrosities of history, and whose deeds and destinies shocked the world.

Today, we are witnessing the birth of new patriots.  Americans who are forsaking truth for lies, dignity for a red baseball cap, and decency for wire cages to humiliate and degrade our own humanity – counterfeit patriots.  This is the picture of the new Counterfeit Patriots, as our Attorney General (Sessions) so eloquently displayed himself to be, before a high school audience on July 24, 2018.  They are disillusioned and disenchanted men and women across America, who have forgotten, or never understood, the viciousness, callousness, ruthlessness and inhumaneness of counterfeit patriotism.

I write words and thoughts that may soon be outlawed and banned.  I write truth that is already being labeled as “un-American” by Counterfeit Patriots.  I write words to help shine light into the alleys, rallies and backrooms where truth, liberty and justice are being smothered and silenced, and where votes are being censured or denied.

Our history is full of true American patriots.  Americans who stood up and spoke up in defense of our heritage and our legacy.  If only I could have the courage to do half of what they did . . . maybe then, I could consider myself a true patriot.

Your second paragraph highlights the myth that is America. From the first steps of the colonialists, there was never liberty and justice for all. And its no surprise that it hasn't changed and there's no expectation that it will. Usianguke

Americas' history is vivid. One has to understand America on her proto-human civilization. Its defensive nature however rose in 'seventeen hundreds' when, and where freedom for independence's being thought. If you go through the civilization, you 'll earn, possibly, the answer you have had to gather.
