My eyes flutter open to the dull light shining across the horizon. A sense of familiarity. A feeling of dread. The frigid morning air seemed to pierce clean through the teal fleece blanket wrapped tightly around my back. It hardly masked the late autumn winds forcing my hair into my eyes, despite me pulling it back. I reached for my phone, before realizing it was gone. I looked back onto the frost covered grass where I woke up, and saw nothing but the indent of a body, motionless in sleep. It was then that I realized I had no recollection of how I got there.

I closed my eyes and tried to feel past the dread overwhelming my body as emotions started to come back to me. Eagerness, excitement. I felt people around me although there was no one. I vaguely remember shouting “Happy Birthday!” I taste liquor on my breath.

Continuing to try to remember, I noticed glistening ahead. Car keys, laying on the frozen grass. They looked familiar and gave me a gut twisting feeling. I kept my eyes closed now, as more glimpses and emotions flashed through my mind like shots from a camera.

I can remember the feeling of gliding down a road, weightless. Lights zoomed past my left side. I stepped towards the keys as the crunching sound of frozen grass turned into the shattering of broken glass.

I kneel to pick up the keys as I see one last glimpse of two lights drifting from my left side to straight ahead of me. They get larger as a loud sound pierces the air. Screaming. A large thud. Glass and metal breaking.

My eyes flutter open to the dull light shining across the horizon. A sense of familiarity. A feeling of dread.
