reminiscing about my time in service

The Old Veteran

He joined the family history of going

Off to war.

Though he didn't know it at the time,

Or what he would be fighting for.

He joined because it was the thing to do,

And he'd had enough of school.

He didn't join to impress anyone,

He didn't care if he was cool.

A history nut is what he'd been

His entire, short, young life.

He'd read of others that had gone to war,

Their glory, their bravery, their strife.

He'd walked through cemeteries, seen the flags,

And secretly was impressed,

That these few stones, among the millions,

Were the reason he was blessed.

He joined when he had come of age,

And was finally done with school.

He found that he had just begun to learn

Living under stricter rules.

He did the time, learned the rules,

Cut his hair, and passed the test,

And then was sent out into the world

Bright and shiny, elite, the best.

He went to other countries

To represent his kith and kin.

In tropical jungle, desert sand, arctic snow,

He met all types of men.

He went in peace, and he went too war,

He asked no quarter and none was given.

He made right with his family, and with his God,

And was sure of his place in heaven.

Now his service has ended, and he is Old,

And he works among the masses,

But his oath still holds, and he'd do it again,

If such a circumstance passes.
