A couple goes out for a date.

Entering the restaurant, the couple held each other’s hand, their bodies nearly touching. There was no mistaking the signs that screamed that they weren’t just friends, but lovers. They looked around and leaned their heads close to discussing where to seat as other guests tried to keep their distance.

Maxine watched from her station hoping they would pick another section, any just not hers. Her prayers weren’t answered as they slid into a booth and snuggled closed. Maxine felt ill as she approached the table with the pitcher of water.

Quickly turning over the glasses she poured the water. “What can I get you both to drink?”

“I’ll have a root beer,” one answered.

“Ice tea, but only a little ice please.”

Maxine hurried off as she felt her stomach knot up. It wasn’t illegal, but it was unusual almost unheard of now. The studies had proved it over and over until people began to listen. Even then the older generations had resisted, but their kids and grandkids embraced the change. Laws put in place to protect the last holds out were still on the books somewhere so Maxine knew she would have to smile and try not to puke as she served the couple their meal.

She came back with their drinks and nearly dropped them as she saw them kissing, his tongue in her mouth. She sets the glasses down and hurried away covering her mouth as she felt her bile rising up. A hundred years ago a passionate kiss between a man and woman was thought to be normal, but science had proven it was akin to dogs mating with cats.

She was taking care of other guests ignoring them when the man called.

“Waitress, can we get a little service we have been waiting 45 minutes.”

Biting back her anger she tried to fix a smile on her features as she approached.

“I’m sorry sir, I was busy. May I take your order?”

“I’ll have the bacon and cheddar burger with a side of fries.”

“And for you Miss?”

“I want the fish sandwich, light tater sauce, and a side of coleslaw.”

After giving the order to the cook Maxine hurried to the bathroom. She flung open a stall door and dropped to her knees to dry heave into the toilet. She felt so disgusted by that couple, she understood that once it couldn’t be helped but now there were treatments.

As she gained control of her stomach again, she rose and splashed water on her face. She considered telling the manager she was sick and having one of the other girls cover her station, but that wasn’t right. She couldn’t force one of them to deal with that obstinate, she would just have to tough it out.

When she heard that order was up, she hurried over and picked it up. She glanced around to make sure no one was watching before she spits on the food. She smiled as she sets the food down, her stomach feeling much better. Maybe the law said she had to serve them, but nothing said she had to be nice about it.
