These accounts are the same story from different points of view. The first is from Tyler. Getting through the school day is hard enough. There isn’t much that can make it any worse. There are a few exceptions however.

from my single earbud into my ear as I stared blankly at the dry erase board at the front of the classroom. I could hear our teacher talk but didn’t comprehend anything she was trying to tell us. I just tapped my finger gently against the desk and sighed slowly through my nose, closing my eyes so I could focus more intensely on my music.

Since I wasn’t paying any attention to my teacher, I didn’t even notice when she stopped talking altogether. What I did notice was the steady ringing that sounded through my music. At first, I thought it was a part of the song. Or maybe my earbuds were dying. I hoped that wasn’t the case, I just got these last week.

Gradually, the ringing rose above my music and my eyes snapped open as screams sounded in the classroom. My teacher was trying to keep everyone calm as some rushed towards the door and others hid under their desks.

I looked around at them in confusion and pulled my earbud out. “What’s going on?” I asked but nobody seemed to hear me over the loud screech that used to be a slight ring in the air.

My teacher suddenly realized I was still in my seat and rushed over. “Tyler! Get up!” She yelled at me, grabbing my arm. I stood up for her and followed her gaze towards the window.

At first, my eyes and brain couldn’t comprehend what was outside but after a moment, they didn’t have much of a choice. A giant plane was hurling itself towards the ground right outside of our school.

“Oh my god,” I thought to myself but apparently I had said it out loud because my teacher gripped my arm tighter and pulled me towards the door. I tripped over my chair legs but that didn’t stop me from running out into the hallway.

The halls were even more chaotic than the classroom I was just in. Teachers and students ran around frantically, not sure of what to do. Not like there was much to do.

In a single instance, the roof caved in on itself and we were all forced to the floor. I felt something hit me in the back and I fell to the ground. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. My ears rang and I could just barely hear screams in the distance, but this time, in pain rather than fear. I tried to move but whatever had hit me was still on top of me, keeping me pinned tightly.

It got harder and harder to breathe and I could feel something warm oozing its way out from in between my back and the heavy thing on top of me. Now I was really wishing my ear bud was just dying.
