WHERE IS AMERICA?  WHERE HAVE ALL THE DREAMS GONE?

By Al Garcia

Hear the roar and thunder in the sky, as the night ignites in color, and in a spectacle of light and fire that arouses the languishing spirit of an exhausted nation.

Listen to the echoes of the drifting tides of time that have shaped and forged the character, depth and potency of human imagination and inspiration.

Feel the wind that blows across the fields, that gust against the mountain cliffs, and drive the sea’s unrelenting waves that grasp at castles in the sand.

And it is then that I remember what America used to be.  It is then that the shadows of betrayal, duplicity and disloyalty begin to overwhelm the brilliance and radiance that used to define and explain the America that nurtured and inspired me.  Where is America?

For one brief moment, we saw the display of fireworks as they filled the sky, and we heard the sound of symphonies, marching bands, and harmonic melodies pay homage to a time and to an idea borne to arose the human spirit, and stimulate the mind and sentiment of ordinary men and women yearning to believe in the magic of hope and fidelity.  For one brief moment we saw, we heard, and we felt America as it was meant to be.  Where is America?

But when the smoke-filled sky began to clear, and when the music stopped, we returned to the reality that is America.  The hate returned.  The brazen courtship by unscrupulous and unprincipled leaders and their followers, with undemocratic, repressive, coercive, despotic and even tyrannical authority, continued across America, as shamefaced men and women, masked to hide their faces from the light of day, marched, while others gathered at rallies to listen to and shout the repugnant rhetoric of oppressive, dogmatic and fascistic rants to bring down a dream that has outlived and outshined the worst of their shameful, tenuous and conniving notions.  Where is America?

Gone are the white flowing robes, masks, and conical hats.  Now, supremacists and nationalists and even Nazis, drape themselves in the American flag.  Rally around the American flag.  Hug the American flag.  And then, they step on that same American flag, as they boldly and brashly attempt to tear down the very ideas and ideals identified and represented by the stars and stripes that has draped the caskets of fallen heroes, flown over crimson fields of blood and tears, and proudly waves from sea to shiny sea.  Where is America?

I do not recognize the America I see.  It has become a place filled with people who hate, despise, loathe and deride every aspect of the American Dream.  It has become a spectacle of depravity, when once it was the epitome of the building blocks of democracy.  Not perfect.  Not faultless or flawless.  But an evolving creation of human imagination and motivation.  Where is that America?

The voice of reason, wisdom and conviction no longer sounding boards for those seeking to become leaders and mentors in a chaotic and tumultuous political arena.  Instead, it is a race to the bottom of the swamp.  Politics has become a calculated competition of outlandishness, outrageousness, and absurdity, geared to confuse, obscure, obstruct, bamboozle and divide.  No platforms, policies, proposals, programs, principles or morality in any form.  The eloquence and nobility of America is gone.  All replaced by the arrogance of greed and power.  The very things our Founding Fathers had so articulately and powerfully attempted to assure would never overshadow their dream.

Now, it is a nightmare that is being promoted and proffered by American leaders, as the alternative to 245 years of aspirations, dreams and expectations.  It is a nightmare that history has boldly and unflinchingly detailed through terrors, horrors and evils already lived, and times that have already shown us the endless flood of innocent blood, ceaseless tears, and the painful agony and anguish of human sacrifice and slaughter.  Where is America?

Why is America floundering to keep its identity, its nobility, its democracy?  It astounds me that the very leaders who once saw and believed in America’s greatness and potential, now seek to destroy it, and abandon the unrealized possibilities and opportunities that are waiting to be imagined and conceived by American ingenuity, vision and creativity.

Where is America?  Where are the people who still believe in America?  Where have all the dreams gone?
