Chapter 6

Alan sipped his coffee, a gleam of immense satisfaction in his eye as he looked at everything he had, which was spread out on the floor before him.

He had to return to the museum to get the final item he had forgotten last time; the upper part of the Spartan chariot.

Alan loved ancient history, just as his father did. However, in his brilliant mind he also knew majoring in it would never pay the bills.

He surveyed his laboratory, workshop, and living quarters.  All was set. In just another minute, he would immerse himself into his work, and not stop, but just to eat, rest and go to the bathroom until his project was finished

Duncan had started getting just a wee bit too chummy, so Alan graciously thanked him for everything and left about two weeks ago, despite Duncan's protests.

The senior college student had had his suspicions about Duncan for quite some time.

Into the very early hours of the morning he worked. It was 2:46 AM when he took a shower and then collapsed on his bed.
Sleep still came at great difficulty as all the excitement had grown within him.

The intellectual prodigy was very close to finishing the formula!

Alan sat at his breakfast table and watched the morning news. A reporter was interviewing a woman who had apparently been a victim, or near victim, of a robbery.

"I swear I've never seen anything like it,"  the short woman with long dark hair in a white blouse said,  " we were being robbed while heading to our car and this man, dressed in black who referred to himself as 'The Night Raven' , comes out of nowhere and saves my son and I!"

"Did you get a good look at him?" the reporter asked.

"Not really," the woman answered, " it was dark and everything happened so fast."

Alan switched off the TV and passed his welding equipment ,making his way to the laboratory,

After swirling the test tubes in the centerfuge, he mixed them together into one flask. Slowly he stirred the elixir.

It was now a crimson red color. He stuck the hypodermic needle into it and slowly filled the the cylinder.

He glanced up into the mirror, questioning himself if he really wanted to proceed.

Then he thought of his father once more.

Alan plunged the needle into his vein. In a just few seconds it was over.

He sat down an waited for ten minutes. Nothing.

He went over to a window and caught sight of a doe and her two offspring wandering around. It was a beautiful day.

He remembered how his mother loved animals so much. Then it hit.

Alan screamed and fell to the floor, writhing in immense pain.

April and I sat together, finishing our coffee, and watching the news.

It appeared that I had become quite an unidentified celebrity. A reporter was interviewing the New York Chief of Police.

"We sure don't know who this guy really is, but he refers to himself as 'The Night Raven' . And he's done some very nice things for us, just like one of those comic book superheroes," the middle aged black police chief said.

"Has he broken any laws, Chief Daniels?" the reporter asked

"Technically, we're really not sure yet," the chief replied, " and as you can imagine establishing anything like that is not exactly at the top of our priority list right now."

The screen went to a commercial and April squeezed my hand.

"I'm so proud of you," she said. But then the smile went away and her head turned from me. I knew what she was thinking. Worried about my safety.

Changing the subject, I asked "What time is your  interview with the Times today for that reporter job?"

"I have to start getting ready now," she replied, " it will be in another hour and a half."

A little while later I watched as she walked out the door, turning and waving to me. How I loved that smile. Just then I prayed that no harm would ever come to her.
