Chapter 2

Become Like A Child

Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Matthew 18:3 (NLT)

Children have a simplicity about them, they do not try to complicate things in life like we adults have become so good at doing. We seem to have mastered the art of being able to take something very straightforward and turn it into something totally complicated. It does not even have to be anything significant, only some small detail that we scrutinize so much making it into something it was never supposed to be…long and difficult. Simple is a word which many of us just do not seem to understand. Yet, God does not tell us anywhere that we are to complicate our lives. The Bible in fact says that the Lord protects the simple.

The LORD protects the simple (childlike)…

Psalm 116:6 (AMP)

How often do you find yourself complicating things? Are there any areas in your life which you could simplify?

Children are also exceptionally trusting; you don’t see them sitting around all day worrying about every single detail of their life; they trust their loving parents completely to take care of all their needs. In fact, any parent would feel extremely hurt if their child did not trust them to take care of their needs. This trust gives the child comfort and contentment to be free from the burden of worry and to truly enjoy their life. As a loving and caring Parent, your heavenly Father wants you to come confidently to Him just like a little child, to trust Him, and to put your faith in Him to take care of all your needs. Relying on God in all areas of your life will truly set you free and will release you from the many burdens which you are carrying.

The Lord is my Strength and my [impenetrable] Shield; my heart trusts in, relies on, and confidently leans on Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song I will praise Him.

Psalm 28:7 (AMPC)

The life of a child is constantly joined with that of their parents. From the day children are born, their parents care for them, teach them and guide them in all things. They learn basic skills like how to walk, how to talk, how to behave appropriately, and many other things. In the same way that a child’s life is connected with their parents, Jesus wants you to join your life together with Him. As a new child, Jesus will simply care for you just like a parent would care for their new born baby, attending to all of your needs with great compassion. Then gradually He will begin to teach you and guide you one small step at a time. He wants to take care of you, to guide you, to talk to you, and to help you in every area of your life. Talk to Him just like a child would talk to their parent.

It’s absolutely beautiful watching children talk; they are so very candid in what they say. Children don’t analyse what they should or shouldn’t say, they simply say whatever is on their mind. This is how we should be in our relationship with God. There is absolutely nothing that you cannot talk to Him about. I was never taught that I could talk to God anytime and anywhere. The only time you ever said anything to God was on your knees, using eloquent and formal words. This somehow did not feel natural to me. It made God appear to be Someone Who is unapproachable, and Who does not understand me at all.

In my heart I loved God and I longed to be close to Him, to talk to Him about all of my problems. I wanted Him to be my Friend, my Confidante, my Counsellor, Someone I could share everything with, Someone Who I could count on, Someone Who would always be there for me when others were not. So, I began to share all of my deepest feelings with Him. I would talk to God often during the day, and in bed before falling asleep – not only on my knees. While there is certainly nothing wrong with kneeling in God’s presence, you do not need to be on your knees every time you want to talk to God. God is more than happy to hear from you and to spend time with you no matter what position you are in.

Become like a child; tell Him everything that’s on your mind, and allow Him into every area of your life. It is only when you are close and intimate with Him, that you will find the true and lasting joy which you are searching for.

You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 16:11 (AMP)

When my daughter was learning to take her first steps, she would look for something to hold on to which could help her to stand, then letting go of whatever was supporting her she would very unsteadily attempt to walk. Initially, she would only manage to take one or two steps, before falling back down again. She would get up and fall many, many times, before finally learning to walk confidently.

Whenever a child falls down, they don’t just sit there crying all day. They never give up; they try, try, and try again, until they finally succeed. Our walk with Jesus is so much like that of a child. When we are learning to walk with Him, we make mistakes, sometimes it may even be too many to count. We fall down often, sometimes we fail miserably, however our loving Father is always close by to ready catch us into His loving arms. We may feel unsteady on our feet, our steps can be extremely shaky, yet He always helps us get back up again, and tenderly guides us in the right direction.

It may take numerous attempts, and many falls, before you learn how to walk but what’s most important is that you don’t give up. Sometimes it may seem that you take the tiniest step before falling right back down. It may appear as though you are making no progress at all, but don’t let that discourage you. There is nothing the devil wants more than to push you down, and to make sure that you never get up again. He will try to do everything in his power to discourage you by making you feel guilty every time you fall. He will try to deceive you into thinking that God is so disappointed in you; that the mistake you made can never be forgiven; or that you are just not good enough for God to care about a failure like you. These are all lies! The devil is the father of all lies, when he lies, he speaks his native language. Every time he sees you making any kind of progress, he will try to attack you.

I have found in my life that the greater the progress, the more intensely satan attempts to bring me down. You see nothing scares the devil more than seeing you getting closer to God. Each time that you make the choice to trust God and continue your walk with Him, the easier it becomes to defeat the enemy. Resign from self-effort, and just like a child become completely dependent on God. As you take a stand against the devil, he will run the other way.

So then, surrender to God, stand up to the devil and resist him and he will turn and run away from you.

James 4:7 (TPT)

The most important thing is that you continue to look ahead and to never lose your focus on moving forward. You do not have to fight this battle alone. Your compassionate Father is always close by ready to assist you, to catch you when you fall and help you get back up onto your feet again. The longer you walk with Him, the more confident you will be. Become like a child who is learning to walk and never give up.

No matter what happens in your life, no matter how far you fall, even though you may think that you have fallen into a pit which is so deep that you can never get out of it…don’t give up.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with My victorious right hand.

Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)

There is no place so deep that your Heavenly Father cannot reach into, take you into His loving arms and gently place you back on your feet, ready to walk with Him again. Don’t worry if you don’t feel steady, He will be more than happy to hold your hand so that you don’t lose you balance. And in moments where you just feel too weak to even stand, let alone walk, He will carry you.

He lifted me out of the pit of despair; out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.

Psalm 40:2 (NLT)

Once you begin to walk with Jesus, you will find yourself growing closer to Him every day. Just like a child, lean on Him, depend on Him in all things. Live with the confidence in knowing that you are never alone. As you learn to rely on Him, you will see that He will come through for you each and every time which in turn will give you the faith to trust Him more and more. He will never let you down, and unlike people who can hurt you, God will never, ever, hurt you in any way. He always has your best interest at heart. It doesn’t matter how old you are, God wants to take care of you.

I will be your God throughout your lifetime – until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.

Isaiah 46:4 (NLT)

As you are reading this, Jesus is holding His warm, and loving hand out to you. The most beautiful hand you will ever see. A hand once pierced by a nail, now only the scars remain, a reminder of the excruciating pain which the Saviour endured just for you, to set you free and to release you from the bondage of sin. The only thing that is required of you is to simply say “yes.” Will you take His hand and walk in freedom? A freedom which will totally transform your life.

As you do, I am praying over you, and, I declare that you are being released from all the chains of bondage which are holding you down. You are being set free to walk just like a child, holding the hand of your most precious Saviour.

Enjoy the journey on the new path where God will lead you.

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying,

“This is the way; walk in it.”
