A man learns of a legendary lost city which becomes his obsession.

This is the original version of this story. I wrote this many years ago and over the years I have thought about rewriting it knowing it wasn't my best work. I ended up starting a longer version which will be posted under books.

I had heard about the lost city, the forgotten realm and it had grabbed my imagination. I had to learn more and poured through the ancient records for any small piece of information on it. It took years, but I learned all there was to know of the lost city.

It was the story of a fearsome warrior who had fallen in love with a beautiful and adorable girl that was loved by all. He won her heart and as a sign of his love had a huge elaborate castle built. The people flocked to the castle and soon a city had risen around it. The warrior and his wife were made the rulers of this great city, but the warrior desired more and sought to conquer the neighboring cities. Time passed and their neighbors were conquered, but always there were new realms to take over.

The warrior realized that he was a great warrior but a poor statesman so he allowed those who appeared to be good statesmen to have power in his name. These men were not as trustworthy as the warrior thought and they secretly plotted his and his Queen’s downfall. They financed a huge army that attacked the realm with such vicious resolve that the army of the realm was forced to retreat before them. The warrior raged and demanded to know where this army was from. He sent his forces out to meet them, but they always seemed to know his plans. The realm began to collapse and the people started to flee. The men the warrior had invested power into disappeared and the royal couple ordered the gates to the city sealed for the first time ever. Then with powerful and ancient magic the gates were locked.

The men the warrior had given power had made good their escape and in time they built cities of their own, but always these cities never lived up to the legend of the lost city. These men fearing that somebody would awaken the warrior and he would ride forth to seek revenge so they attempted to erase all knowledge of the city. They forbid any to speak its name and in time the name was forgotten by all. These men in time lost power and others arose to take their place and life went on but the damage these men had started continued as more and more information on the lost city was lost in time.

My desire to see this lost city grew as I learned more about it, and so I attempted to locate any map that showed its location. No map gave any indication of it, so I was left to wander the realms hoping to stumble upon it. I did stumble upon something an old man that was blind, crippled, and said to be crazy. He gave me a map that he said was handed down through his family that would lead me to the lost city. Normally I don’t follow maps giving to me by crazy old men, but my desire was great.

I hurriedly made preparations for the trek and spent hours comparing this old map to modern maps. Finally, I had the location so off I went with 20 porters. We faced countless dangers along the road and 2 of the porters died, but finally, only a jungle stood between us and the lost city. That is when the porters informed me that that jungle was haunted and they would not enter it. I tried to bribe them and even force them but in the end, it was me alone who hacked his way through the jungle to look down on the lost city.

I couldn’t believe I had found it and squatted on a ledge looking down on it in amazement when movement in the city caught my eye. I quickly uncased my binoculars and studied the city through them and that is when I saw the people moving through the streets. It wasn’t many but there were people in the lost city. I quickly descended the cliff and made my way to the gates which still stood closed after all these hundreds of years. The corner of the right gate was broken off large enough for me to walk through standing erect. As I entered the city I moved to the shadows not knowing how these people would react to somebody from the outside. It was shortly after I got into the city that I saw 1 of the “citizens” of the once-great city. It was a zombie dressed in rags but acting like it was alive and the city wasn’t in ruins around it. I know I should have run from that god-forsaken place right then but I didn’t I followed this nightmarish creature deeper into the city. We finally arrived at the castle which I had read the description of so many times. It was the jewel of the city but now it was a wreck and my unknowing guide lead me inside. We arrived at the throne room and I watched as these zombies put on a mock play of life.

I was preparing to leave when I felt a presence behind me, something powerful and very evil. I turned and found myself face to rotten face with the undead warrior king. My hand slides towards my blade on its own, but before it could grasp it he grabbed my wrist. His voice was like nails running across slate. “Would you truly draw steel in this place of peace and grandeur? In the very presence of my Queen, you would attempt to draw my blood.” I was about to ask what grandeur and make a remark about his dead Queen when I saw it. The room changed, the shattered pillars were whole the collapsed balconies were as solid as the day they were constructed. The zombies were transformed into living people and their clothes were of such finery that modern royal courts looked stark compared to them.

Then my eyes fell on her and I saw true beauty for the first time. She was a Queen in every sense of the word. I was willing to lay down my life for her, to swear undying loyalty anything just to have her smile upon me. The spell was strong but something in me broke it and I remembered the shambling rotten corpse in a rotten tattered gown standing there a second before. I yanked my wrist free and I ran from the throne room as quickly as I could, but I still heard the king whispering in that hideous voice of his. “Run all you want you will come back someday they all come back to serve me forever.”

Definitely a story in need of elaboration, glad you took the time to do it. I have several stories that have the same character in them that I am planning to put in one book too. I also have one story that started as a short story that became a story unto itself and now I'm over 50,000 words into it and only half way. Great idea, and I will definitely find the tome to read the book. Good job and keep writing, I am looking forward to more.

This is from my chat site days. I would post stories on my chat room profiles so they had to be short. I have a couple that I have started to rewrite and make better and in many cases longer. I appreciate you taking the time to read it and leave a comment.
