Remnants of an ancient past lie dormant. Brittle and crumbling stones struggle to retain their long-lost majesty atop a once formidable mountain. The souls of a vibrant and peaceful race silently whisper desperate pleas for salvation in a delicate mist softly caressing a barren hillside. The solitude is deafening.

A team of researchers from the Planetary Observation and Preservation Command have just hastily evacuated the ruins after experiencing hyperdimensional anomalies resulting in hallucinations, panic and hysteria among the on-site research team. A lead researcher had been busy searching a newly discovered tunnel near what was thought to be a ceremonial alter. Having lost track of the time, Doctor Dana Winthrop emerges from the tunnel to discover she had been left behind. Surprisingly, the team had been quite thorough in removing all traces of their excavation including samples and equipment. Taking a moment to ponder the harsh reality that she has been abandoned by her team, Dana reluctantly sits upon the crumbled remains of an old pillar.

A dwarf star sinks below the horizon as a chill begins to drift through the ruins. The only warmth she could find is from an artifact blanket she has with her from the tunnel. Dana knew the protocols for evacuation. Anyone left behind would be classified as collateral damage. No rescue efforts would be made. Her thoughts whirled as she switched her mindset to survival mode. Years of training for excavations on exoplanets in habitable zones has prepared her for this moment. Nonetheless, she felt a sense of calm even with the countless questions as to why the team evacuated suddenly. Staring off into the distance the soft caress of the setting sun provided a small shred of hope reminding her that at the very least, this planet could sustain human life.
