Mary's Cabin

Trapped like a fly in a country boy’s jug

Wed to a tyrant who shared not a hug

She dreamed of escaping to some other's arms

The poor lonely housewife of Bramblenook farms

She showed no resilience or so it would seem

Her chores defined daily a mundane routine

Then the bickering husband went down for a spell

A partial stroke rendered him mentally unwell

His friends called upon him to ply him with beer

And cannabis products they'd grown for the year

So off to the woods pulling wagon or sleigh

With chainsaw and axe, she would whittle away

Two years dedication and high on the bluff

A tiny notched cabin stood mighty and tough

It wasn't the biggest at ten by twelve long

But it was a place where her heart could be strong

No drunk from the village, no laws from afar

No snooping civilians, no road for a car

A labor of love, now her secret fulfilled

As his ex-wife sucked up to inherit his will

With rifle and ammo, arrows and bow

Shovel and hatchet, seeds, rake and hoe

Fireplace and chimney, pelts on the line

She claimed her log cabin, there deep in the pine
