A futuristic police raid.

Sanchez entered the house after the swat team had subdued the residents. He couldn’t help but look at the dirty walls and filthy floor as he walked down the hall to the kitchen in the back. Entering the kitchen he let his eyes wander over the scene taking it all in. The female was cuffed to a chair by the kitchen table. She had a ragged worn-out look about her. The man was face down on the floor a trooper’s rifle pointed at the back of his skull. The two kids, a boy who looked eight and a younger girl was huddled in a corner whimpering as another trooper trained his weapon on them.

Sanchez glanced over his shoulder at his new partner, Kim Ashlin. She had only transferred in from narcotics a few days before and this was her first raid. She looked around slowly her delicate oriental features blank as she kept her emotions in check. She stepped to the right of the kitchen doorway and leaned against the wall as Sanchez walked over to the table.

Pulling his service pistol Sanchez laid it on the table as he sat down facing the woman. He studied her more closely now. Her once dark brown hair was going gray and her face was covered in wrinkles. She had bags under her eyes that spoke of sleepless nights. Her baggy dress had been patched so many times Sanchez wasn’t sure if any of the original material remained.

A trooper dragged the man to his feet and cuffed him before depositing him in a chair next to the woman. He had the same worn-out look as the woman, but instead of going gray, his black hair was just receding leaving him with a large bald spot. There was fear in both of their eyes as Sanchez ran his fingers slowly over the butt of his pistol.

A trooper came over and handed Sanchez a tablet and he looked at it frowning. He scrolled through the information pulled up on the tablet before he handed it back to the trooper.

“Everybody out, now.”

The troopers quickly moved through the doorway and down the hall. Ashlin hesitated.

“Procedure requires that two officers be present at all times.”

“I’m your supervisor Detective so if I tell you to get out, you get out.”

She hesitated for a second then stepped through the doorway and closed the door behind her.

Sanchez’s eyes shifted back and forth between the man and woman. He watched as they fidgeted and sweated as he just sat there looking at them. He had years of experience in breaking a subject, these two were easy.

“You are pregnant again aren’t you?”

The woman nodded.

He looked at the man and smiled before he quickly raised his gun and shot him between the eyes. The impact made the man’s chair begin to tilt back but then he fell face-first into the table. The kids began to scream and the woman looked like she was going to give birth right then. Sanchez laid his pistol back on the table and fished a packet of cigarettes from his coat pocket. He tapped one out and lit it. He slowly smoked it waiting for the kids to stop screaming.

Once the kids screamed themselves out Sanchez smiled at their mother. “You were a God-damn lawyer so you know you have broken the law, you even know the penalty. Are you just stupid or crazy?”

The woman looked him in the eye as her eyes filled with tears. “You wouldn’t understand. That law is wrong it is destroying us.”

“The law is the law and I’m just doing my duty. I don’t give a damn if you think the law is wrong it is the law and the punishment for breaking it is death. I shouldn’t have to explain it to you, but just so we understand each other I will. I can put a bullet in your head and then do the kids the same way. I’ll go home have a glass of wine kiss my girlfriend, maybe make love to her, and not give you or those kids a second thought. I have done it countless times, but I have been authorized to offer you a deal, life imprisonment, the kids adopted and raised by others and all you need do is tell me how to contact the people that have helped you.”

“How do I know you will keep your word.”

“You don’t but why would I lie to you? You give me the information and we round up a few more like you, you don’t and we will still end up catching them in the end.”

She looked over at her kids as tears ran down her cheeks. “There is a forum on the deep web. The people on it talk about the fact that the law is unjust.”

“I need the web address.” Sanchez slid his pen and notebook over to her.

She wrote out the information and pushed the pen and notebook back to him. Sanchez looked it over and smiled. “Thank you.”

He put the pen and notebook back in his coat pocket before slowly standing up. He turned to the kids and smiled. “For the crime of illegal birth, you are hereby sentenced to immediate execution.”

The pistol jerked in his hand as he shot each child in the head. The mother started screaming as she tried to break free of the restraints holding her to the chair. Sanchez turned to her. “You are hereby found guilty of breeding and sentence to death.”

He shot her in the head before holstering his pistol and turning to the door. Ashlin was standing in the open doorway her face pale. He walked past her as he headed for the cruiser, SWAT would clean up the mess and dispose of the bodies. He heard Ashlin following him but he ignored her as he walked out the front door.

“Why did you do that?”

He didn’t even glance back as he headed for the driver's side of the cruiser.

“You said her and the kids wouldn’t be killed if she gave you the information then you shot them.”

He climbed in and started the car and Ashlin hurried to get in the passenger seat.

“This is the job so you best get used to it.”

“Lying to them is the job?”

“How old are you?”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Answer my damn question.”

“I’m seventy-eight years old.”

“I’ll be two hundred and fifty-one in two months. I remember how it was before. I was one of the first to get the treatment which as you know gives us something close to immortality as long as we continue to take it. I have been alive through it all. The years were the population grew out of control and we hung on by a thin thread as overpopulation pushed us into wars for food and resources. I lost my daughter during those long years when starvation became the norm. It became clear something had to be done so the death lotto was established and my wife’s number was called. I remembered the day they announced breeding was a crime. In time the population was brought under control and our society grew out of that chaos. We have the perfect society where nobody wants for anything, but those people and ones like them want to destroy it all. They would breed and have kids and their kids would have kids until we are back to the days of starvation and war. If I have to lie and kill them to keep that from happening I will do it because I do not want to go back to the way it was.”

“But can’t you see we have lost something now that we can live forever?”

“What have we lost? There is no more starvation, no more disease, no more war, so tell me what we have lost that is so great?”

“Our drive, that spark that makes us all want to create, to build, to exceed. We live forever so no one feels the need to push themselves anymore because they have all the time in the world.”

“You should watch yourself, you are starting to sound like one of those breeders.”

Control would change everything. If people had more self-control, I can't imagine where we would be. I loved it. Thank you so much.

A well written and well thought out story, Gypsy Rose. Wars and plagues have kept world population in check but there may come a time when that isn't enough. I for one, however, have no wish to live forever, so I would allow a few of the little breeders to survive.
