It was cold.

It was always cold, but on this particular morning, the chill of the air seemed to pierce the blanket.

This was the fifth time she had made this trek alone, after years of making this trek with a friend.

She spoke a lot the first time, when she carried his ashes up here five years ago.But after her good-byes, she had little to say.  She still had little to say today.

She thought back to the first time she took this trail, and the sad abandoned puppy she found on it.  She shared her snack, and the puppy followed her up the mountain and back. Part of her wanted to simply leave, but she couldn't bring herself to abandon those sad eyes.

She beckoned and called "Rex", he jumped in, and stayed by her side for ten years.

She wanted a future, and thought a man named Eric would be part of it.  And, for the first year, he was a wonderful addition to their family.  They were happy.

Until he became jealous and possessive.  During an argument about a coworker she was found of working with, Eric struck her hard enough to send her sprawling to the ground.Rex stood between them, and for the first time in his entire life, she saw the dog bare his teeth.  That was enough to drive him away.

Until 2 weeks later,  when he came back to talk, but brought a gun.

She refused to talk, so he fired bullets through the door.

Rex took that bullet for her.  And while Eric was arrested soon afterwards, Rex died in her arms.

One day she'd think of the future again.  But today, she just missed Rex.

It was cold.

It was always, cold.
