I watched the clouds drift over the moon last night and that was that.

Unnatural Death

There’s a stillness in the night

When you know

something’s not right

In the campsite embers glow

And lovers spoon

There’s an old hoot owl

Up in the tree

But even that wise old bird

can’t see

The dangers

when the clouds cover the moon

At first it was all okay

The campsite

was set up by day

With the radio belching out

A Skynyrd tune

It was just some summer fun

But if they’d known

No doubt

They would have run

From the chaos and carnage

When the clouds

Cover the moon

Snapping branches

Startled them awake

But by then it was too late

There stood

the ferocious beast

Whose sole intent

Was to mete out their doom

It looked to be

Half man and half bear

All claws and teeth

To rip and tear

Any foolish flesh found

When the clouds

Cover the moon

The police didn’t find

The bodies right away

So they were there

For several days

But even the woodland creatures

Didn’t touch the bloody ruin

The sheriff ruled

The tragedy homicide

But no one ever testified

Save for a mournful howl

When the clouds

Cover the moon
