"If you can take a seat, the doctor will be right with you."

Faye looks around the waiting room. The pastel blue chairs feel so sad. There's no one here this morning and she’s grateful for that. She’s not sure she could even muster a faint frozen smile today. She sits down in the corner chair next to the water dispenser, clutching her purse tightly in her lap.

Why do doctor's offices always feel so sterile? Would it hurt to add some color to the walls? Put a couple of plants on the tables? Fresh flowers near the sofas?

She picks up the February issue of People magazine. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are on the cover. She didn't know they were getting a divorce...or that Angelina was fighting for custody of the kids. She flips through half-heartedly. Everyone's got their issues she thinks. ?

“It’s going to be fine," she repeats to herself unconvincingly. “Positive thoughts. Deep breaths.”

She opens her iPhone, attaches earbuds, and flips on her meditation audio. She skips past the intro, where he talks about the benefits of hypnosis … and goes right to the visualization. His familiar hypnotic voice begins ...“Y-O-U are on a m-o-u-n-t-a-i-n top. It is q-u-i-e-t here. You can hear b-i-r-d-s in the distance. B-r-e-a-t-h-e…” His lullaby voice continues, “b-r-e-a-t-h-e into the m-o-u-n-t-a-i-n … b-r-e-a-t-h-e into the valleys ...

This is doing nothing for her today.

She turns off the audio.

She can feel the tears starting to form in her eyes, her belly doing flip-flops.

She leans back, looks up, and exhales one long audible sigh.

The door near the reception desk opens. A woman holding a clipboard step out and props the door with her foot.

Faye Johnson?” she asks.

“Yes,” Faye responds.

“The doctor will see you now.
