I just wanted to draw a tender scene between two rivals. I got the idea when I was re-reading The Outsiders, funny enough. Also, I've learned about neopronouns and wanted to get used to using some by incorporating them into stories.

Ace hummed as he watched the snow swirl by. The storm was so thick that it painted everything grey-white. When a stray brush of wind made him shiver, he turned back into the cave and crouched by the flame, fanning it with a hand. In the corner of his eye, he caught sight of Fel shivering—it was the first time he’d seen xyr moving since the fight.

He quietly tip-toed over and craned his neck to look at xyr face. It was scrunched tight, insinuating xe was still in pain.

“Fel? You awake?”

No response. Xe was probably still unconscious, or at least semi-conscious. Xyr body was just reacting to xyr wounds and the cold.

Ace felt terrible about the whole situation. Not that it was his fault—it was Fel who had insisted on fighting him tooth and nail. Then again, he hardly believed Fel wanted to be the villain. What with the trauma that had brought xyr to xyr current situation…

He shook his head. He didn’t want to think about it. He sat down between Fel and the fire. Even with the flames burning orange, the winter cold snuck into the cave.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t save you from them,” Ace murmured, watching the embers leap up and wink out. He wondered if xe could hear him. “I mean, well, I guess I did, but you still got hurt. To be honest, though… Maybe it was a good thing. Maybe you had no other way to leave under the radar. Heaven knows you needed to get away. It’s funny, though… I don’t think you really want to fight me.” He looked back at Fel. For such a petite person, xe was determined and strong-willed and feisty. Now xe was wounded and helpless and unconscious. “I know you don’t want to fight me. And I really don’t want to fight you.”

Reaching out, he hesitated, then carefully touched Fel’s cheek. Xe was freezing!

“You’re gonna hate me for this.” Ace gingerly turned and lay down behind Fel. He brought himself close to xyr and wrapped an arm around xyr chest, careful not to touch xyr bandaged side wound.

After a couple of minutes, xe started to warm up, and the shivering died down. Hopefully, once xe got xyr temperature back, the shared body heat would sustain both of them. The wind whirred outside, and the crackling fire filled the cave with the scent of burning pine. Slowly, Ace’s eyelids became heavy. On the precipice of falling asleep, he felt Fel pressing closer into him. He gave a smile, and drifted off to sleep.
